Christians in Nigeria are demanding protection from authorities after a woman was stabbed to death for allegedly insulting Mohammed.
Bridget Abihime, a trader and pastor’s wife, was murdered Thursday for allegedly saying Islam’s prophet was not important. Nigerian police say two suspects have been arrested.
Nigeria’s Christian Association says believers face a “looming religious crisis” and police aren’t doing enough to protect them.
“This barbarism must stop now,” Rev. John Hayab, the group’s spokesman, said.
He accused police of trying to cover up the killing and demanded that all those involved in Abihime’s death be arrested and prosecuted.
Police Chief Solomon Arase promised those involved would be held accountable and called on community leaders to help in “dousing the tensions.”
He said all security agencies were being deployed to prevent the incident from “degenerating into a major security threat.”
