One of the country’s biggest retailers is facing a boycott after taking a side in the debate about who can go to the bathroom where.
Target said this week that it would “welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”
The company said it issued its statement because of a raft of legislation about toilets, such as the North Carolina law mandating that residents use the bathroom for the gender on their birth certificate.
While some may say that the chain is right on target, its decision has sparked an outcry from those who have supported the recent regulations.
The American Family Association released a statement urging its members to boycott the big-box store and support a petition that had more than 129,000 signatures as of Thursday night.
AFA President Tim Wildmon said that the policy “poses a danger to our wives and daughters” and “ is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims.”
Congressman Louie Gohmert, a Republican from east Texas also threatened to quit shopping at Target because of its decision.
It remains to be seen whether conservative pressure will have an effect on the Minnesota corporation’s bottom line or its thinking.
