An ordination service was held Sunday for Captain Maggie Lawrence at Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in south Nashville.

She was the first African-American woman to earn the rank of captain within The Nashville Fire Department.

Lawrence, who has been with the fire department for 30 years, was also a fire inspector and a fire investigator.

She told News 2 she’s a few years away from retirement, so becoming an ordained minister will open new doors for her.

“This has been a life-changing experience just to know that this is a journey that god has destined and ordained for me to walk. I’m just somewhat fascinated in awe just to be able to represent one of god’s children to let others know there is hope and there is love,” she said.

She will now be able to pastor a church, start a church, perform weddings, and funerals.
