The bad news is: you are on your way to Hell. The good news is: Jesus Christ died on the cross to save you from Hell. #8
TEXT: Matthew 8:11-12: “And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
This is the eighth message in our series on Hell leading up to Halloween. People today, even many Christians, do not like to talk about Hell. However, I believe that if lost people become convinced about the reality of Hell, they would trust Christ as Savior. And if saved people believed in the reality of Hell, they would tell lost people how to be saved from Hell.
Today, we are going to look at those who are cast into hell from Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon was England’s best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon became pastor of London’s famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building and moved into and out of two larger venues. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861 the congregation moved permanently to the now-famous Metropolitan Tabernacle. Spurgeon was also a prolific writer, publishing over 35 books and pamphlets including the massive, 7-volume Treasury of David.
Regarding those who are cast into hell, Spurgeon said:
The second part of my text is heart-breaking. I could preach with great delight to myself from the first part; but here is a dreary task to my soul, because there are gloomy words here. But, as I have told you, what is written in the Bible must be preached, whether it be gloomy or cheerful.
There are some ministers who never mention anything about hell. I heard of a minister who once said to his congregation, “If you do not love the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be sent to that place which it is not polite to mention.” He ought not to have been allowed to preach again if he could not use plain words. Now, if I saw that house on fire over there, do you think I would stand and say, “I believe the operation of combustion is proceeding yonder?” No; I would call out, “Fire! fire!” and then everybody would know what I meant. So, if the Bible says, “The children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness,” am I to stand here and mince the matter at all? God forbid! We must speak the truth as it is written.
