Three months ago when news broke that her cousin Josh Duggar had admitted to molesting five girls, including his sisters Jill and Jessa, when he was a young teen, Amy Duggar was just as shocked as the rest of the world.

“I didn’t know about it,” Amy tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue. “It took me by surprise.”

Though Amy, niece of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, has always been close to her cousins, this was a family secret she wasn’t privy to.

“I knew that he did go away for a little bit, but I didn’t know why,” she says of when Josh was sent away to receive therapy after his parents learned of the incidents.

And despite widespread speculation that, along with cousins Jill and Jessa, she, too, was a victim, Amy wants to set the record straight. “I was not part of it at all,” she says. “I wasn’t anywhere near any of that.”
