Newsweek Hires Matt McAllester as New Editor-In-Chief For Europe, Middle East and Africa

Newsweek has hired Matt McAllester as editor-in-chief of its Europe/Middle East/Africa edition, the magazine’s parent company, IBT Media, announced Monday. McAllester, currently the editor of Time’s European edition,  will start his new role on Aug. 17.

“Newsweek’s EMEA edition and coverage are a critical piece of the global growth of Newsweek, so we are very excited to have Matt join our team in London to lead the charge in that region,” Johnathan Davis, co-founder and chief content officer for IBT Media, said in a statement.

McAllester’s hiring comes on the heels of what IBT media calls a “restructuring” of Newsweek’s EMEA edition. On July 14, the company announced that it was streamlining its European and U.S. operations, in the process laying off EMEA’s eight London-based print staffers whose positions had become “redundant.” Richard Addis, then the EMEA editor-in-chief, also announced his departure at the time, but said he would continue to advise IBT Media on business and editorial matters.
