A former cook at a Mount Olive restaurant admitted on Wednesday that he spat on a roll that was intended to be served to a customer — accepting a plea deal that would send him to jail for three years.

But that will be concurrent with a four-year sentence expected for an unrelated charge — meaning he’d serve four years in all.

John F. Stagg Jr., 33, of Independence Township in Warren County, pleaded guilty in Superior Court in Morristown to a single charge of tampering with food.

Stagg, in an interview, reiterated that the roll was not actually served. He told NJ Advance Media in April that a customer at Kennedy’s Pub on Route 46 in the Budd Lake section kept sending her chicken française dish back and that he spat on the roll, but “I thought about it and didn’t serve it.”

Stagg said he voiced his frustration concerning the customer out loud and a co-worker “who wanted my job” heard him and turned him in to authorities. He was fired after the incident.

He admitted in court that at the time of the Oct. 17, 2014 spitting incident, he was on parole.

The guilty plea represents Stagg’s third criminal conviction.
