Samsung’s Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 will be available to pre-order starting Friday.
Want to trick out your new Samsung smartphone? Reserve the headset on BestBuy.com tomorrow. The Oculus-powered device will be on sale online starting May 8, and arrive at brick-and-mortar stores starting May 15.
The $200 Gear VR arrived in December, but only worked with the Galaxy Note 4. Now you can use it with Samsung’s new flagship smartphones.
“We’re excited to bring our amazing virtual reality offerings to even more people with the Gear VR Innovator Edition for S6,” said Nick DiCarlo, general manager of immersive products and virtual reality at Samsung.
Unlike the Oculus Rift or other headsets, the Gear VR rig doesn’t have its own independent display and processor. Instead, users slot a smartphone—in this case the GS6 or S6 Edge—into the frame, turning the handset’s 577 ppi, Quad HD Super AMOLED display into an immersive, low-latency projector, capable of 360-degree visuals and 4K playback.
“The continued expansion and availability of the Gear VR platform is a strong signal to VR developers and content creators about the viability of this new opportunity,” DiCarlo said in a statement.
