Things have not been rosy for Andrew Garfield in the Spider-Man camp for some time. In November, the Amazing Spider-Man star said that Sony Pictures’ meddling resulted in the underwhelming second film, and in December leaked emails from the studio intimated that he wouldn’t be cast in future Spider-Man films.
Fans may be taking to Twitter in their hundreds in an attempt to #SaveAndrewGarfield, but the new merger between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will mean a new casting for the role of Peter Parker in the forthcoming Captain America: Civil War.
While it’s not yet clear what direction Marvel and Sony will take their new Peter Parker, if they’re sticking to his creation in the comic book series then the character is a adolescent orphan whose skill and fascination with science makes him vulnerable to bullies at high school. Like any teenager, he struggles with rejection, inadequacy and loneliness – and that’s before he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and has to learn how to control his newly-gained spidey powers.
However, the Spider-Man origin story has been addressed by two films already, perhaps Marvel and Sony would be wise to give audiences an older, more battle-scarred superhero. It’s worth noting that the Parker in Captain America: Civil War is beyond his teens.
Social media users have been crying out for a return of original Peter Parker actor Tobey Maguire for the new films:
But then the comic book version of Spidey was so juvenile anyway, the new actor could definitely be old enough to move the story on even if he’s in his mid-20s. So who could play him? Here are our runners and riders.
