Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, an Israeli helicopter strike in Syria killed a commander from Lebanon’s Hezbollah group and the son of the group’s late military leader, in a major blow that could lead to reprisal attacks. The strike hit a convoy near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing six Hezbollah members in all. It comes just days after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said frequent Israeli strikes in Syria were a major aggression, that the group was stronger than before, and that Syria and its allies had the right to respond.

Second, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to Newsweek, a detachment of about 800 servicemen from Russia’s Northern Fleet has been stationed in a Russian town just 50km from the Finnish border as part of a large-scale expansion of Russian military facilities in the country’s northwest. The rest of the fleet are expected to be stationed there “soon.” The base will be one of the key strongholds in Russia’s northernmost territories, designed to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities from the west, and improve their territorial claims over areas in the Arctic.

Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Dozens of Chadian tanks headed out of the capital on Friday south towards Cameroon to help fight Nigeria’s dreaded Boko Haram insurgents. The convoy left after Chad’s parliament voted to send armed forces to Cameroon and Nigeria to fight against the Islamists. Cameroon’s President Paul Biya had announced that Chad had agreed to send “a substantial contingent” of troops to help Cameroonian armed forces, who have faced repeated attacks from Boko Haram.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Jerusalem Post, the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies has published a report stating that the Israeli military must be prepared for three principal security scenarios in the near future, naming them as a large-scale ground war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, attrition against Hamas in Gaza, and the possibility of a military operation in Iran. The report warns that Israel faces threats posed mainly by non-state entities motivated by Islamic ideology. It states, “The strongest of them is Hezbollah, which was formed with a dual purpose in mind: It represents Iran’s long reach in the area and against Israel, while at the same time it aims to control Lebanon, where the Shi’ites are the largest ethnic group.” Hezbollah most closely resembles an army, and its arsenal totals some 150,000 missiles and rockets, several thousand of which can target any area in Israel. “This rare and substantial firepower apparently even exceeded the firepower possessed by most of the European states combined.”

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of DISEASES & EPIDEMICS — According to Bloomberg, David Nabarro, the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy on Ebola, has said that West Africa’s Ebola epidemic has morphed into several micro-outbreaks of varying intensity and with the potential to reignite more widespread contagion. A report by the Global Ebola Response Information Centre stated that the pattern of spread has become more nuanced and complex, occurring over a wider area. Nabarro said, “Ending the outbreak will not be easy because the disease is being transmitted in three countries with a collective land area greater than the United Kingdom… The virus is lurking close by and in coming months it may make a comeback if we become complacent and let down our guard.”

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Leviticus 23:3 which reads: “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

Israel’s seven holy feasts listed together in Leviticus 23:1-44 and in the parallel passage (from Numbers 22:16 to Numbers 29:40 which contains further sacrificial details), are often called “the feasts of Israel.” They are better thought of by using the terminology employed throughout this passage: “the Lord’s appointed times” or “the appointed times of the Lord.” These dates were to be “holy convocations,” solemn occasions in which the Levitical worship system of priests and sacrifices, based within the tabernacle (and later the temple), would play the significant role. Usually, some degree of congregational participation was also required.

The seven holy feasts can be subdivided into a spring cycle comprising the initial four holy days, and a fall cycle comprising the remaining three feasts, with a three-and-a-half month break between the two cycles. It is essential to note that the Lord specifically refers to these feasts as “His appointed times”; these festivals are correctly viewed as belonging to the Lord just as they belong to Israel.

Prior to enumerating the seven holy feasts, the Lord summarizes the specific appointed time that Israel is to observe throughout the entirety of the annual cycle, the weekly Sabbath, which still had to be observed regardless of whether it fell, as it often did, in direct conjunction with one of the seven holy feasts.

The Sabbath is mentioned 111 times within the Old Testament, and an additional 67 times within the New Testament. On this day, the priests were to double the quantity of the normal tabernacle sacrifices. Most critically, however, the people of Israel were to remain in their dwellings and enjoy a complete rest and cessation of all labor. The only Israelites who were exempt from this mandatory cessation of labor within the confines of their own neighborhood were the priests functioning within the tabernacle.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from John R.W. Stott. He said, “He who came in humility and shame will return in spectacular magnificence.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
