The Traditional Presidential Pardon of the Thanksgiving Turkey

Every year before Thanksgiving, the president pardons a turkey. It’s a tradition that’s been ongoing for decades, as these photos show — though some earlier presidents skipped the “pardoning” part and headed straight for the dinner table.


President Harry S. Truman squints as he touches the wattle of a 35-pound Tom Turkey from Oregon as it is presented to him, in the White House Rose Garden on November 18, 1952. The turkey, intended for the president’s last Thanksgiving in the White House, was given by representatives of the Poultry and Egg National Board and the National Turkey Federation.
