Alabama, which handed Mississippi State its first loss on Saturday, moved from No. 5 to No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 released Tuesday night.

Yet Mississippi State also stayed firm in the Playoff race, falling only to No. 4. The Bulldogs are one of three one-loss teams in the top four, joining No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Florida State.

Last week’s top four was Mississippi State at No. 1, Oregon at No. 2, Florida State at No. 3 and TCU at No. 4.

There were questions this week whether TCU’s close win at Kansas would persuade the 13-person Playoff selection committee to move Baylor ahead of TCU, but that was far from the case. In fact, the committee moved Baylor back a slot to No. 7. Ohio State moved ahead of the Bears after beating a ranked Minnesota team which remained No. 25 in this week’s rankings.

Utah moved back up to No. 17 after being No. 23 last week. The Utes have been No. 17 three of the four weeks the Playoff rankings have been released.

The selection committee is determining the teams that will play in a four-team tournament for college football’s national championship this season. The group is scheduled to meet and release new rankings each Tuesday through Dec. 2.

The committee’s final decision is scheduled to come at 12:45 p.m. ET Sunday, Dec. 7. Later that day the committee also will select eight other teams to compete in the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange and Peach bowls.

The national semifinals will be held at the Rose and Sugar Bowls on Jan. 1. The championship game is at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
