Airplane and Helicopter Collide Near Maryland Airport; 3 Dead, 2 Injured


A fatal collision involving two aircraft is under investigation.

According to Maryland State Police, a plane and a helicopter collided midair near the Frederick Municipal Airport. It happened around 3:40 p.m.

Three people are confirmed dead, two others were taken to a Hagerstown hospital. It’s not clear the extent of their injuries.

Wreckage from the Cirrus SR22 aircraft ended up nose-first in the trees. A recovery chute deployed from the back of the plane. There are reports it was inbound to Frederick from Cleveland, Tennessee.

Air traffic at the Frederick airport resumed around 5:30 p.m.

The R44 helicopter flying a training exercise crashed about 100 yards away in an industrial park.
