TEXT: John 14:1-3

During the American Civil War, General William Sherman led his troops on a decisive march to the sea through the state of Georgia. In a fort on Kennesaw Mountain, he left behind a small contingent of men to guard the rations. Shortly thereafter, General John Hood of the Confederate Army attacked the fort, and a fierce battle followed.

One-third of Sherman’s men were killed or wounded and J.M. Corse, the general in command, was severely injured. Just as he was about to hoist the white flag and surrender, a message came through the signal corps set up on a chain of mountains. General Sherman was within fifteen miles of the fort and sent a message saying: “Hold fast. We are coming.” Those few words encouraged the defenders so much that they held on and kept the fort from falling into the hands of their attackers.

Our heavenly Commander has also repeatedly given us the assurance that He is coming. The Lord Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” The fact that our Savior is coming again gives us hope. It makes us want to stand our ground. It encourages us to continue fighting the good fight of faith. It assures us of victory.

No matter how fiercely the battle may rage and no matter how desperately we may want to give up, we have the courage to hold on because we know that Christ is coming again.

Today, we are going to look at the final three reasons to believe in the return of Jesus Christ.

1. The past humiliation of Jesus Christ demands that He return. If Jesus Christ does not return, do you know the last view that the unbelieving world will have of the Son of God? The world’s last view of Jesus Christ will be that of a bleeding, dying criminal covered in blood hanging on a cross in Jerusalem. Can you imagine God allowing that to be the state in which the world remembers Jesus Christ? Of course not.

2. The present position of Satan demands that Jesus return. The Bible tells us that Satan has influence in the Earth. Three times in Scripture Jesus Christ calls Satan the “prince of this world.” Do you think that God will allow the Earth to continue to be influenced by Satan? Of course not. The devil is not the real king of Earth. He is a usurper, an impersonator, and a defeated enemy. He is acting like he is in control of something that does not belong to him. And that is why Jesus Christ must return.

3. The hope of saints for the future demands that Jesus Christ return. Before Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven, He made sure His disciples understood that He would return. He gave them hope. Immediately after His ascension, two angels appeared to the disciples and said, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”

We can wait for that marvelous day with great confidence. Titus 2:13 says, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” That is what we are doing as believers. We are looking for Him to return. And just as Jesus promised His disciples in John 14, Jesus Christ has gone to prepare a place for us and He will come again.
