Sunday Evening Evangelistic Message #150
with Daniel Whyte III
TEXT: Philippians 4:7-8
On last week, we looked closely at part one of a three-step action plan from Philippians 4 in the word of God that will help us accomplish much in life and particularly in this new year. Part one of this action plan is prayer.
Today, we are going to focus on the second part of this plan — think. We covered some of this in the first message in the “Pray! Think! Do!” series, but Philippians chapter 4 has more to say on the matter of how the Christian should think or how a Christian’s mind should be set. From this passage, we notice three things.
1. The peaceful mindset of the Christian. Verse 7 starts out by saying, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding…” This is the kind of peace that the Christian should have. Peace is calm in the midst of conflict, stillness in the midst of the storms of life. A Christian’s mindset should be a peaceful mindset.
2. The powerful mindset of the Christian. Verse 7 goes on to say that the peace of God “shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When we have a peaceful mindset, we also gain a powerful mindset through the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. The purposeful mindset of the Christian. We covered this part of the passage in our first message in this series, so we will only deal with it briefly here. Verse 8 reads, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” We see from this verse, that the Christian must be purposeful in his thought life. He cannot have a wandering mind that rests on anything and everything that happens to come through. He must think about certain things on purpose.
If we do not choose to be purposeful about our thought life, we can allow ourselves to become subject to the tricks of the devil. He is looking for people whom he can easily influence to do his will, and his influence often starts in the mind. That is why we must follow the Bible’s guidelines in order to have a peaceful mindset, a powerful mindset, and a purposeful mindset.
