What is the Gospel? According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, the Gospel is embodied in these words: “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

1 Corinthians 2:2 says, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, writes regarding the Gospel: “The promised birth of John the Baptist is good news, not only for his parents but for all the people: John is sent to prepare them for Messiah’s coming. John’s own preaching is Gospel for the same reason. The Messiah would be coming to execute judgment, a process that involves both condemnation and Salvation. John’s message is Gospel for sinners in that they are warned of impending doom and urged to repent before the ax falls; it is Gospel for the repentant in that they are promised forgiveness and membership in Messiah’s community. The Birth of the Savior Himself is announced as good news bringing great joy.”

TEXT: Matthew 5:31-32:

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

———-

Gary Chapman said, “Couples looking for a quick fix for their marital woes often become frustrated, abandoning the marriage too early, and thereby missing the benefits of God’s timing. I like to encourage couples to give some time. I use two years as a guideline. For people who are separated because of adultery or who are thinking about divorce it seems like a terribly long time, but in all of life, it’s a short time.”

We have begun looking at what it means for a husband and wife to reconcile after one or the other has committed adultery. The first thing is for the offending party to confess his or her sin and demonstrate that they have completely turned away from the illicit relationship.

Second, the offended party must forgive their wayward spouse. Forgiveness is not based on feelings or emotions. You will not feel like forgiving your cheating spouse; and you will want to hold their adultery against them. But the Bible commands in Ephesians 4:32, “Forgive one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

Forgiveness is one thing, grace is another and if the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at how Jesus reveals the true meaning behind the law.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

California’s Wildfires and the Eternal Fires of Hell (Gospel Light Minute X #292)

Click here to listen to this podcast episode.

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

For over a week, deadly wildfires have ravaged Northern California and seem to have given no indication that they are about to let up. Forty people have perished and tens of thousands have fled their homes. Hundreds are missing. And millions of dollars worth of property and possessions have been lost. According to The Washington Post, “the horrific scale of death and destruction is coming into focus. The blazes have killed more people than any other California wildfire on record. The death toll is certain to rise as authorities — some accompanied by cadaver dogs — continue to explore the destruction.”

It is tragic to hear about people dying, being injured, and being uprooted from their homes and livelihood due to this monster fire. It is doubly sad to know that many are now grieving the loss of loved ones. Because much of the area affected by these fires belonged to California wine country, businesses have been destroyed, many are without jobs, and the losses will take decades to recover from. For many of the families affected, it may seem like the worst thing that could have happened.

But it isn’t. The actual worst thing that could have happened also has to do with fire — the eternal fires of Hell — the place where those who die without Christ go to spend eternity apart from God. Firefighters will, one day, be able to put out the wildfires in California, but the eternal fires of Hell will never be put out.

The Bible tells us that Hell is a real place of eternal fire, eternal darkness, and eternal torment. In fact, it has often been observed that Jesus Christ, the loving, miracle-working Son of God, spoke more about Hell than any other Biblical figure. Listen to these words by Dr. Tim Keller: “Jesus speaks of ‘eternal fire and punishment’ as the final abode of the angels and human beings who have rejected God. He says that those who give into sin will be in danger of ‘hell fire.’ The word Jesus uses for ‘hell’ is Gehenna, [which refers to] a valley in which piles of garbage were burned daily as well as the corpses of those without families who could bury them. In Mark 9:43, Jesus speaks of a person going to Hell where ‘their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ Jesus is referring to the maggots that live in the corpses on the garbage heap. When all the flesh is consumed, the maggots die. Jesus is saying, however, that the spiritual decomposition of Hell never ends, and that is why ‘their worm does not die.’ If Jesus, the Lord of Love and Author of Grace spoke about Hell more often, and in a more vivid, blood-curdling manner than anyone else, it must be a crucial truth.”

In light of this crucial truth, it is important that you prepare now to avoid these eternal flames. Instead of ending up in Hell, you could end up in Heaven where you will experience eternal life in the presence of God.

Do you want to know for sure that you will escape the fires of Hell and go to Heaven when you die? If so, allow me to share with you how you can give your life to Jesus Christ today and be given a home in Heaven for eternity.

First, you must realize and admit that you — just as myself — are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Our sin nature is the reason why we do not get along with each other on earth.

Second, you must understand that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” — spiritual death and physical death. We die physically and go to the grave because of sin and we die spiritually and go to hell because of sin.

Third, you must understand that you are on the road to hell because of your sins. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Fourth, you must accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Fifth, you must accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Because of God’s love for you, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sin. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the Cross for our sins, we can live with God in Heaven for all eternity after we die.

Finally, with these facts in mind, you must repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour, please pray with me the following prayer to seal your decision once and for all: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your new-found faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Joan Reid: ‘If God Was Not in Charge of My Life, I Wouldn’t Be Where I Am’ (Gospel Light Minute #237)

She is an accomplished Para-Nordic skier and rowing competitor. She competed in 2007 in the ASW1X World Championships as well as the World Cup for para-nordic skiing. She also qualified for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Besides her degrees in business administration and psychology, this Canadian born rower also enjoys kayaking and cycling.

She tells her story of faith like this, “I was raised by Christian parents and we went to church often. I gave my heart to Jesus as a small child and always stuck to that faith, making several recommitments along the way in life. At the age of 24, I was working as a cook at a Bible camp and went up to a creek to do my Bible devotions. I remember praying that I was ready to give God all of my life, whatever that meant, even if it meant enduring tragedy. Two weeks later, I was in a car accident that broke my back and left me a paraplegic.

“I remembered that prayer to God, and the whole time I was recovering, it was never a super difficult transition for me. I knew that it was God’s plan at the time. I started taking up some athletics as part of my rehabilitation and began doing adaptive skiing, then rowing.

“My faith has been the main reason I’ve been involved in sports and gone on to more elite levels. It’s always been a form of ministry and something God was always in control of. I knew if God took me out it was part of His plan for me. I didn’t understand why (I had the accident) and now I realize this is a ministry for me. I’m not sure what that means at times, but I’m striving for what He wants me to strive for and it’s in His Hands.

“Getting to London (for the 2012 Olympics) was a lot harder than getting to previous events, and there have been times I was asking God, ‘Why does this have to be so hard?’ But as soon as I put my trust in Him, He gives me that peace that I need. It amazes me how I can see how much He loves me in the way He answers prayers. He blesses more than I can even imagine, and over the last year, He has really shown me how much He wants to bless me. Whether I win or not, or even make it there, is still in His Hands.

“If faith is your life and God is your guiding factor, you can’t separate faith and sports. If God was not in charge of my life, I wouldn’t be where I am. There’s no way I could have done this on my own steam. The things I’ve been able to do have been miraculous. He’s brought me to this point and that’s by trusting Him and letting Him do the work through me.”

Her name is Joan Reid.

This is the “Chief of Sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me. Just as Joan Reid trusted Jesus Christ as her Saviour, may I encourage you to do the same. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell.

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again.

1 Corinthians 2:2 says, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, writes regarding the Gospel in the New Testament: “Almost without exception, the New Testament restricts its application of Gospel terminology to proclamations made during the time of fulfillment—the age in which the Salvation promised in the Old Testament is actually accomplished. The New Testament is preoccupied, not with promises of Salvation, but with news of Salvation. According to Mark, the Gospel begins not in the Old Testament but with John the Baptist, in whose work Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled. In Romans 1:1-5 the Gospel is represented as a blessing promised in the Old Testament but not actually given until Jesus comes.”

———-

TEXT: Matthew 5:31-32:

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

———-

Laura Petherbridge said, “The ability to pardon your spouse comes from God, not your own strength. He will help you. Your role is to surrender and desire His way above your own.”

What does reconciliation look like in a marriage that has been broken by adultery?

First, the offending party must confess his or her sin and demonstrate that they have completely turned away from the illicit relationship. This cannot be a situation where the adulterer confesses because they got caught, but because they truly understand how they have offended God and their spouse. This is shown, not just by words, but by actions. Recently, on the Focus on the Family radio broadcast, a couple in leadership at a local church shared their story of how they reconciled after the husband committed adultery with a woman in the church. After he confessed his sin to his wife and they chose to reconcile, the wife told the woman that he not only had to leave the church, but leave the city, and she did. If the offending spouse isn’t willing to cut off all interaction with the person they committed adultery with, there will always be doubts about whether that person has truly repented.

How to Overcome Temptation, Part 62 (Onward Christian Soldiers #186)

Click here to listen to this podcast episode.

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

Welcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

— PRAYER —

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 62”

In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are going to continue looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.

The sin that we are going to continue looking at today is the sin of “lust.” This is the third sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.

Today, we will begin looking at 1 Peter 2:9-12. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)

1 Peter 2:9-12

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

—–

Warren Wiersbe said, “In the Old Testament period, God’s people had a priesthood; but today, God’s people are a priesthood. Each individual believer has the privilege of coming into the presence of God. We do not come to God through any person on earth, but only through the one Mediator, Jesus Christ. Because He is alive in glory, interceding for us, we can minister as holy priests.”

“It is important that we, as God’s priests, maintain our separated position in this world. We must not be isolated, because the world needs our influence and witness; but we must not permit the world to infect us or change us. Separation is not isolation; it is contact without contamination.”

In this passage on abstaining from fleshly lusts, we find several reasons why we ought to do so. The first reason why is because abstaining from lust is proof that we are changed people, that we are truly a part of the “chosen generation, the royal priesthood, the holy nation.” While a profession of faith is necessary, it is our actions that demonstrate to the world that we are a peculiar people.

Regarding this designation of God’s people, Dr. Warren Wiersbe writes, “The description of the church in these verses parallels God’s description of Israel in Exodus 19 and Deuteronomy 7. In contrast to the disobedient and rebellious nation of Israel, God’s people today are His chosen and holy nation. This does not suggest that God is through with Israel, but it does mean that the church today is to God and the world what Israel was meant to be.

“We are a chosen generation, which immediately speaks of the grace of God. God did not choose Israel because they were a great people, but because He loved them. God has chosen us purely because of His love and grace. Jesus told his disciples, ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you.’

“We are a holy nation. We have been set apart to belong exclusively to God. Our citizenship is in heaven, so we obey heaven’s laws and seek to please heaven’s Lord. Israel forgot that she was a holy nation and began to break down the walls of separation that made her special and distinct. God commanded them to put a ‘difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean,’ but they ignored the differences and disobeyed God.

“We are the people of God. In our unsaved condition, we were not God’s people, because we belonged to Satan and the world. Now that we have trusted Christ, we are a part of God’s people. We are a people of his own special possession, because He purchased us with the blood of His own Son.”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Daniel Whyte III Preaches the Gospel to Harvey Weinstein and Others

Click here to listen to this podcast episode.

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, writes regarding the Gospel in the New Testament: “In only two places does the NT speak of the proclamation of the Gospel prior to the Christian era. It is quite remarkable given (1) the unmistakable presence of the gospel in the Old Testament, (2) the extent of Gospel terminology in the NT, and (3) the fact that the NT presents Christ as the fulfillment of the Old Testament and draws heavily on the Old Testament to interpret His person and work. Not only is it remarkable; it is very significant. It indicates that the New Testament usage depends not only upon the character of the message (truth about Salvation) but also upon historical events.”

——-

At this time I want to share the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with Harvey Weinstein and everyone else. I touched on this the other day and I want to touch on it again. Yes, Harvey Weinstein has done some wicked, evil, and ungodly things. But, before you forget, so have you. We all have.

Yes, what he has done is unspeakable, treacherous, wicked, and evil. But, lest you forget, you have done some bad things too. And, before the church gets on its high horse, a whole lot of sexual harassment has taken place in the church and still to this day. It begins when a beautiful lady is walking into the church and they will hear, even from the pastor, “My, my, my. Look at you. You’re a picture ain’t you.” The lady is going to see God, and the pastor says, “Praise the Lord! Give me a hug, girl, give me a little peck on the cheek.” He’s married and got five children, but he’s a devil, a Harvey Weinstein in the church. It’s been going on for years.

I have told you I know pastors who have a wife at home and a “wife” at the church. Oftentimes, it is his secretary and she fits him like a glove. She knows everything about him, probably more than his wife does. It happens all the time. Harvey, even in your Jewish synagogues, such things have taken place.

What I’m amazed at is how that wicked, evil, ungodly sinners who used to run with Harvey, they knew what he was doing, even the women knew, and the women knew what they were trying to get. Lying, devilish, hypocrites, phonies, and fakes. I won’t give you two-cents for these women who do all kinds of ungodly things to get a major contract, to get a job, or to keep a job. He wants something and you want something. Then, all of a sudden, even after 30 years, 25 years, 20 years, here you come — when you really ought to keep your mouth shut at this point because it makes you look bad. Basically, you have gone along with it for 20-25 years knowing that he was going to do the same thing to other little starlets with their eyes big with dreams and silly-minded enough to do anything to get it, and they’re left with guilt and shame. You’re a sinner too.

I believe that God holds men responsible for their sins and women responsible for theirs. You’re not a little innocent kitten. Yes, he was more powerful than you, but you knew that before you laid down on the couch. Everybody wants to gang up on Harvey Weinstein. I believe Jesus is saying, “All you hypocrites, whores, and whoremongers out there — male and female, waxing eloquent against Harvey Weinstein, cast the first stone. This time it’s a man. Cast the first stone.”

You got what you wanted. You got your dirty Oscar. You got your big paychecks. All on his genius back. Yes, he’s a pig. Yes, he’s no good. Yes, he’s rotten to the core. But don’t act like you didn’t know anything. Especially you men. Big stars, riding on the back of the genius hog to you stardom, your delight, and your million dollar paychecks. Now, all of a sudden, you’re an innocent little angel. We all know that if Harvey would begin to talk, many of you were right there with him. And some of you women, claiming that he harmed you in some way — and he did; he took advantage of his power — but you let him, and you didn’t say anything about it. Only a few said something back then. And we thank God for those. You have some character about yourself. And, hopefully, you didn’t submit to anybody else; hopefully you didn’t get involved with somebody else who was doing the same thing — because the casting couch has been around a long, long time.

So, Harvey, the world may not love you anymore. But, I want you to see that, with your marvelous gift that God has given to you, how the world will do you, how your friends will forsake you. Harvey, you were so good at what you did that when people heard that it was a Weinstein movie, they didn’t care who the actors or actresses were. They went because they knew that it was going to be a first class movie. Don’t be surprised that these same ones who are condemning you to hell and calling you everything but a child of God, they are going to be trying to sneak and get your ideas on how to make a movie — even from prison, if you go.

But, I’m here to tell you, Harvey, that there is somebody who still loves you — his name is Jesus, who is kind of related to you — your ancient brother according to the flesh. He wants to save you. He loves you. They tell us you’re in Arizona for rehab. But, you and I both know that that is not going to help you. That’s just a formality that you’re doing to show people that you’re getting help for a problem that no one knew you had, and that you don’t even believe you have.

Allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

1 Corinthians 2:2 says, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, continues sharing the view of the Gospel from the Old Testament, “By God’s design, Israel’s Salvation depends not upon her own righteousness but upon His. There being no righteousness to reward, the Lord acts to create righteousness in Israel. Yet, Salvation is not accomplished at the expense of justice. The penalty for Israel’s sins is to be paid in full. God’s mercy is not hereby called into question. On the contrary, it is precisely here that His mercy is most poignantly expressed, for the penalty is exacted not from His people but from the Servant appointed to stand in their place. Through the Servant’s work, many shall be justified. The coming of the Evangelist — the Preacher of the Good News — is predicted in Isaiah 61. He is called the anointed One Who proclaims the year of the Lord’s favor. God will be glorified through His preaching.”

———-

John MacArthur said, “In cases where divorce took place on nonbiblical grounds and where the guilty party repents, the grace of God is operative at the point of repentance. It is assumed that the repentant party will endeavor to restore the marriage whenever possible as a sign of true repentance.”

From Jesus’ explanation of God’s true intent behind divorce, we have learned that, though divorce is permitted in the case of infidelity, God desires for those who are His children to pursue reconciliation. What does that look like?

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, said, “Gospel is a word derived from the Anglo-Saxon “godspell” denoting “glad tidings” or “good news.” Of all the passages cited, those of Isaiah provide the most important background for the Gospel in the New Testament. According to Isaiah’s Gospel, it is God alone Who saves, and there is no explanation for His saving action except in His own nature. Israel’s deliverance is undeserved; she is no more worthy of the divine love now than when she went into captivity. In whatever measure she has paid the just due for her past sins, she remains a sinful people. It is only by God’s grace that she is saved.”

Dr. Walter A. Elwell, editor of the Tyndale Bible Dictionary, said, “The Gospel is a channel of God’s grace. Paul says the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel. By this he means, not that the Gospel talks about the righteousness of God (though it does), but that God’s righteousness is actively at work in the gospel. His activity in turn explains how the Gospel becomes ‘the power of God for Salvation.’ And just how does God demonstrate his righteousness at this stage? In short, by bestowing it as a free gift on sinful human beings. It remains the righteousness of God, but by God’s grace, it is a righteousness in which humans may share. Furthermore, partaking of God’s righteousness depends on being personally united with Jesus Christ.”

———-

TEXT: Matthew 5:31-32:

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

———-

The Canons of Basil, written by the disciples of the fourth-century bishop of Caesarea, note: “Our Lord, to the man and woman, equally forbids divorce save in the case of fornication; but custom requires women to retain their husbands, though they be guilty of fornication. The man deserted by his wife may take another, and though he were deserted [by an adulteress], yet St. Basil will be positive that the other woman who afterward takes him is also guilty of adultery; but the wife is not allowed this liberty. And the man who deserts an innocent wife is not allowed to marry.”

As we see from this quote, there was clearly a double-standard in the various teachings on divorce in the first century — both Jewish and Christian. In both the Old Testament and New Testament eras, only men were allowed to issue a “writ of divorcement.” Men could divorce their wives, but women could not divorce their husbands. This obviously created a dilemma for the early church which sought to abide by Jesus’ teaching that divorce was permitted, but not commanded, in the case of adultery. Christian husbands, whose wives committed adultery, could easily get a divorce both by the laws of the state and the laws of the church. But Christian women, whose husbands had committed adultery and who could have gotten a divorce in the eyes of the Church, were not permitted to divorce in the eyes of the state.

Of course, today, the reality is much different. A recent study found that women initiate 70% of all divorces. So, we see that the Biblical teaching on divorce was ahead of its time in terms of equality of the sexes. Although the events of the Bible take place in times where patriarchy was the norm, God never endorses the idea that women are less than men. John MacArthur said, “From cover to cover, the Bible exalts women. In fact, it often seems to go out of the way to pay homage to them, to ennoble their roles in society and family, to acknowledge the importance of their influence, and to exalt the virtues of women who were particularly godly examples.”

So, where does that leave us regarding divorce? The quote from Basil indicates that the early church recommended that Christian women remain with their husbands, even those who had committed adultery, out of “custom.” During that time, with rare exceptions, a woman who was not under the familial protection of a man (husband, father, or brother) would simply not have been able to make it in society. Even today, secular culture has noted the phenomenon of women “standing by their man” after the latter committed adultery. There is much debate around the reasons for this, but many psychologists have stated that there is a lot of work that goes into a marriage, and after being together for 10, 15, 20 years or more, the wife (and, often, the husband) feels like it would be a waste to throw away everything that has been built over the years. This is an important consideration in light of the Biblical teaching of reconciliation in the case of adultery. That being said, Christian women are held to the same standard given by Jesus:

(1) It is not God’s will for a husband and wife to get a divorce.
(2) If a spouse commits adultery, the offended one is allowed to get a divorce.
(3) However, it is God’s ideal for the husband and wife to reconcile and not break their divinely-ordained union.

Additionally, she represented the U.S. at the 2012 Summer Olympics and earned the bronze medal. In 2016, she was selected to represent the United States at the Summer Games in Rio.

Before the 2012 Olympic Games, she said this of her faith, “I was adopted at four days old into a Christian family and we went to church every Sunday. I really came to my own faith at age 16 in a Christian Bible camp when I began asking questions. I knew then I was ready to be part of God’s family. Since then, I have been walking by faith through all my trials.

“I began studying taekwondo after my older brother Evan, who is Korean, started taking classes; I wanted to do everything that he did. My younger sister started classes later, so it became a family thing. We mostly participated in after-school clubs and competed at state tournaments. One year I tried sparring and my coach recognized a talent there. I started training more, and sparred at the nationals, earning a medal. I made the U.S. junior team, then the senior team and the national team.

“I knew I had a God-given talent, and I have always wanted to glorify Him in any way I can through my sport. I wanted to be the one saying, “God gave me the talent. Let me see how far I can go and how I can increase it for Him.” I took my problems to God and knew He was in control. If I didn’t win, I knew it was His will, and I had that inner peace in me when I fought in tournaments.

“My faith plays a big role in my sport. Being able to trust my Lord and have faith that whatever happens is His will, gives me the inner peace that makes me ready for anything.

“A lot of athletes think the best approach is to be cocky and think you’re better than the other person. Whenever I tried to be overconfident, I didn’t win. But I know that the opponent is just as human as I am. I believe whoever the Lord wills wins, and it’s really anyone’s win on any given day.

“Growing up, my family would watch the Olympics every year together. I have always been a fan and wanted to be one of those athletes, having those special moments. One of my biggest goals was to make the 2012 Olympic team. I wanted to win it and glorify my Lord in the process. I trusted God, and I gave it my all for Him. He wants me to glorify Him whether I win a medal or win nothing, so I pray I will do that (no matter the outcome).”

Her name is Paige “McFierce” McPherson.

This is the “Chief of Sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me. Just as Paige McPherson trusted Jesus Christ as his Saviour, may I encourage you to do the same.
