The "Great News" of Salvation Through Jesus Christ
Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such -- whatever it was. I was under the impression that anyone who went up and took the chair after the preacher said, "The do-o-o-rs of the church are open," was saved. And then, if a person got baptized he got a little more saved. And then, if they really got a dose of this "Being Saved" stuff, they would follow a set of rules like not drinking and smoking. These really saved folk would also engage in shouting and/or speaking in some unknown tongue on Sunday mornings. Now if a person was considered a hard case, he would have to be put on the mourner's bench until he saw a vision or felt some kind of a change. Then, he was considered saved.
Even though I was raised in this religious environment, I was still rather doubtful about this thing called "Being Saved." I just could not buy what people said "Being Saved" was. I always had questions in my mind about this matter such as: Saved from what? Saved to what? Was a person saved to live a sinless life? Could a person ever lose this "savedness"? If so, how and at what point? It wasn't until I was a grown man and in the Air Force that these questions, along with a host of others were answered. I finally found out what it really meant to be saved according to the Holy Scriptures. Allow me to share with you what "Being Saved" really means. But first, let me share with you what it does not mean...
WHAT "BEING SAVED" DOES NOT MEAN
I am a firm believer that before a person can fully grasp and appreciate truth, error must be exposed for what it is: error. Here are some things many believe "Being Saved" is, but is not:
1. Having your name on a church roll does not mean that you are saved. A person may be a good standing and long standing member of a very fine church. He may attend that church faithfully. But if he hasn't been saved, he will go to Hell with the vilest of sinners. For the Bible states in Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast."
2. Being baptized will not save you. There are many baptized people in Hell. I was baptized at the age of twelve, but I didn't get saved until I was nineteen. Baptism is a very important aspect of the Christian's life, but one should only get baptized after one has been saved. This is to testify to others that you are identifying with Jesus Christ and His death, burial and resurrection. The penitent thief on the cross was saved, but he never got baptized before he died. The Apostle Paul told some Corinthian believers this in I Corinthians 1:17: "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel. Not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect." Brother Paul would not have made that statement if baptism was necessary for "Being Saved."
3. Being able to speak in an unknown tongue does not prove that one is saved. Speaking in tongues is not evidence of being saved. In I Corinthians chapter 12, Paul asked some rhetorical questions regarding the gifts of the Spirit that demanded some very obvious answers: "Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?" The obvious answer to these questions is an emphatic NO! If everyone does not have the gift of tongues, it stands to reason that tongues are not necessary to be saved.
4. Trying to keep the law, much religious activity, and keeping the Golden Rule will not save you. One can't keep the law because all have broken the law at some point in their lives. For the Bible states in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." One may be a preacher, a deacon, an usher and still not be saved. One could shout, dance, sing in the choir, work on every auxiliary in the church and still die and go to Hell. Why? Because religious activity, no matter how much, no matter how sincere, does not save a soul. For the Bible says in Titus 3:5: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost."
5. Seeing a vision or feeling a change at some time in your life is not a basis for "Being Saved". True salvation is not based on sight or emotions, but rather on the eternal, infallible Word of God: the Bible. Now the Holy Scriptures state in the book of II Corinthians and Hebrews respectively that"We walk by faith and not by sight..." and "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
6. To be born into a religious family does not assure that you are saved. Just because your grandparents and parents are saved or religious does not mean that you are automatically saved yourself. It is a fearful truth that every man will have to stand before the Judge of the universe for himself. Psalm 49:7 states: "None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him..."
In short, none of the above are ways of "Being Saved." There is only one way of being saved. Allow me to share it with you now.
WHAT "BEING SAVED" REALLY MEANS
Error being exposed, truth can glisten like a beautiful diamond on the backdrop of black velvet. In order for one to be truly saved, one must first:
1. Recognize the fact that he needs to be saved. Or realize that he is a sinner and totally unable to save himself. Let's face a cold, hard fact. We all have sinned. We all have done something wrong in our lifetime. Everyone born into this world since Adam, with the exception of Jesus Christ, has transgressed the Word of God. The Bible states in Ecclesiastes 7:20: "There is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not." And the Bible also says in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
2. Second, one must realize the fact that there is a horrible punishment for those not saved. That penalty, that punishment, is a place called Hell. Hell is as real as the house you live in, the clothes you wear, the water you drink. Now, whether you believe that there is a Hell or not, it really doesn't matter because your unbelief will not change the fact that there is a Hell. For the Bible says, "Let God be true and every man a liar." If you would investigate the Holy Scriptures, you would find a myriad of verses regarding that awful place. For example, King David said in Psalm 9:17:"The wicked shall be turned into hell and all nations that forget God."Jesus Christ said in Matthew 5:22b: "...Whosoever shall say thou fool shall be in danger of hell fire." He also stated in Matthew 25:41: "Then shall he say unto them on the left hand, depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels." So, friend of mine, there is a very severe punishment for the unsaved and their sins. And that is a place called HELL.
3. The third thing that we must recognize is that God loves us very, very much. God is "not willing that any should perish" (II Peter 3:9). God loves us so much that He gave His only Son. As the Bible states: "...God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Someone once said, "That if anybody ought to want to go to Heaven, it ought to be black folk with all the trouble we've seen." So if it is our desire to bypass that awful place called Hell (and it should be), we need to realize that God loves us more than we love ourselves. And He has made a way for us to escape. And that is by simply believing in the person and accomplished work of Jesus Christ, plus nothing, minus nothing. Now the way for us to apply this to our own lives is to be willing to repent (that is to change our minds about sin), and do as Romans 10: 9-13 says: to simply believe with your heart that Jesus Christ died, was buried and rose again for your sins, and then call upon the Lord in prayer and ask Him to save your soul. And believe me, He will. Romans 10: 9-13: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
If you are willing to trust Christ as your Saviour, please pray with me the following prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life. Amen.

I like some of your comments, but salvation is not repeating a prayer from another man. Salvation of your soul is between you and God. Your have to pray the prayer from your heart to God and believe on him with all your heart and soul. You have to pray until you know for yourself that God has answered your prayer. You will feel peace inside like you have never felt before and you then will know and only then that God has truly saved your soul from hell. Anything short of that is not salvation.I felt strongly compelled to post this to help someone to understand true salvation. It is like nothing else that you will experince in your life. You will know without a doubt that you have been delivered from going to hell when this life is over. It is a feeling in your soul that is better felt than told. May God Bless each and every one of you. My hope and pray is that you will find the true peace in your soul that you are looking for. Read: Psalms, Chapter 116 Verse 1 thru 9 i agree with this. too much fake savedness. everybody need to get real and love Jesus for real. amen Rev! I agree with most of what you wrote with the exception of the scripture you quoted for speaking in tongues. The scripture refers to the gifts of Holy Spirit in which tongues is one of the nine (tongues and interpretation are a gift that God uses to speak directly to an congregation of people)which is different than the baptism of the holy spirit (subsequent to accepting Christ as your Savior and for your personal edification). I encourage you to explore the difference, however, it is not required for salvation but should be sought by every believer because the gift of the in-filling of the Holy Spirit is available to every believer. Just think of those that were present on the day of Pentecost. Not one of them walked away without being filled with the Holy Spirit. I'll take what Brother Whyte III wrote. There is too much emphasis on speaking in tongues in some circles. It detracts from the pure and simple Gospel message and keeps many from seeking the Lord. you thank you can get a quick fiz not so you must be born again Amen! Speak the truth Pastor!

I apecate Your clear presentation.
All this commentation is what has and continues to confuse the issue.Everyone has an opinion. What did the Bible say? Now,before all the opinions start rolling off the press...what did the Bible say?
he just said what the bible says. please don't make this complicated because it will confuse people.
I am curioius. You did not address the issue of being unsaved. Can salvation be reversed if we screw up? You also mentioned that following the law, the Golden Rule, etc. will not save you. By that I assume you mean that there is nothing we can do in terms of merit or achievement that will save us because salvation is a gift from God. I know this sounds criticial but I do not mean to be critical. I am a seeker. I do not want to say I believe in Jesus just to avoid hell, and then go about my business, but I may do that just because I want to avoid hell and get to heaven. I may repent for the same reason, or go through the motions of repenting. I am more likely to be motivated to behave by a loving and caring father than by a father who is quick with the belt or the back of his hand. Hell may be a real destination. But what purpose does it serve other than to scare us into loving God? Isn't that why we preach it and teach it? I am looking to serve God, not because I am afraid of him but because I love him - and because he has no plans to take me into the basement and throw me into the furnace.
Ted
Hi.
I found your Web Site by Google
And I wish you the best you can get,
the peace of God through Jesus Christ.
The New Birth
"No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent
me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written
in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man
therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh
unto me." John 6:44-45. "And he said, Therefore said I unto you,
that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of
my Father." (Verse 65).
The Father draws people to Jesus. Jesus baptizes them by the
Holy Spirit, and the Spirit gives them the new life in Christ so
that they become born again. We become new creations in
Christ. When God created the first man, Adam, he breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and man becomes a living
soul. Genesis 2:7. When Jesus baptizes us by the Holy Spirit
it is a new creating act. The Spirit gives us the new life in
Christ and makes us to new creations. "So then if anyone is
in Christ, that one is a new creation; the old things have
passed away; behold, all things have come to be new!"
2 Cor. 5:17.
Earlier we have been only created beings, now
we are relatives to the Creator. Jesus' Father becomes our
Father, and we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
Through the new birth we enter the Assembly of God, God's family.
This has nothing to do with churches and denominations. The
Bible describes the Assembly of God as the Body of Christ.
Accordingly, a living Body. Rom. 12:4-5. 1 Cor. 10:17. 12:27.
"But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body,
as it hath pleased him." 1 Cor. 12:18. We cannot by men be selected
to members of the Assembly of God.
The Pentecostal preachers use to speak so proudly about the
baptism by the Holy Spirit, and they mean that the "Pentecostal
Revival" has conveyed this truth. However, what did the
"Pentecostal Revival" do? The "Pentecostal Revival" censored
away a big part of the truth of the baptism by the Holy Spirit,
so that this truth has been preached and understood only partly.
As a result of this, the truth of the baptism by the Holy Spirit
has never been preached within the Pentecostal movement.
They have learnt only a little part of this truth, and this they
have turned back to front.
Because of this false doctrine about the baptism by the Holy
Spirit, people have not understood the connection between the
baptism by the Holy Spirit and the new birth. They do not
understand that it is when Jesus baptizes us by the Holy Spirit
we get the new life in Christ and we become born again. The
Holy Spirit gives us the new life in Christ and make the new
birth. We are born of the Spirit. John 3:3-8.
They have preached that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is
only for those who are born again. Yet, on the day of Pentecost
the apostle Peter promised people, which were not born again,
that they would get the Holy Spirit as a gift when they did
repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Consider,
that Peter promised the Holy Spirit to people who had not been
born again! And when they received the Holy Spirit, what
happened then? Well, then they got the new life in Christ and
became born again!
In the Assembly of God (the Body of Christ) we are all
baptized by the Holy Spirit, but not all are speaking with
tongues. 1 Kor. 12:12-31. The Pentecostal preachers have
turned this back to front. They say that only those who can
speak with tongues are baptized by the Holy Spirit, and the
speaking with tongues is the only certain sign of that someone
is baptized by the Holy Spirit. This is a dangerous denying
of a work that Jesus and the Holy Spirit have done, and
legalization of false speaking with tongues.

Again I love what you do and keep on writing this I wish that everyone could visit this site and read this. whoever you are that wrote this you know just what tho say and how to put it and I love you for this. I love this thats all I can say,
I have to tell you that is abhorent that we have "Black" anything in this country.
I like what Morgan Freeman said on how to deal with prejudice...stop talking about it. I asked my minister what did God say about mixed marriages. He said that God turned some men into stone that made fun of Mose's black wife. We devide even more when we make a slur like the word Nigger so powerful that we dare not utter it to tell our chldren not to use it. I am confused Rev. Jackson ...I am sure that you agree that any racial slur is bad since you run the RAINBOW COALITION that includes all colors and races. I am sure that it is just as bad to call someone a "chink" or a "cracker" or a "wetback" or a "wop" or even a "honkie" or a "hymie" (of course he know that term since he used it to describe New York Jews).. I am confused Rev. Jackson...do I say the WE word and the WO word and the CR word and the Ch word and the HY word and the HO word? We will soon run out of acroynms. The Dine tribe was enslaved in America and a terrible slur was used to describe them for so long that they used it themselves and forgot wht it meant. They are the Navaho. While all along now it is ok to say GD on television but not the word Nigger? Of course it is a bad word but just a word all the same. Stupid is just stupid.
I grew up in the South and will attest that there some attitudes that were prevelent and some have been perpetuated by the media and social leaders who profit from constant decisivness. The Lord is color blind and we should be as well. If one is to follow the upsidedown backwards world of God, then one is to realize that The Lord ALLOWS misfortune to fall upon us to move us back to his direction. I heard a black African preacher say that the reason that his people were enslaved was that they in mass turned from God and started to worship Allah and their ansestors and ect... The American Indian did the same and they were over run. Now the nation that the Lord blessed is being over run as it turns away. AMERICA!!! Minority led congregations should be praying for revival and to forgive the people that they see as their enemy. The white man. Dont tell the white to treat you as equals and seperate you while your leaders seperate yourselves from the Anglos because it gives them more power politicly.
When has Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton ever said to forgive their oppressers or even mention the name JESUS? If there are people doing you wrong the Lord says to look within yourselves to see what he is trying to do. We are all brothers and the Devil does not want us to come together. I am a Anglo Christian who was born in the north raised in the south and hve had to fight my own peers many times in the sixties and seventies oever the stupid notion that race means anything especially to God. I still hear today from the minority preachers like that Wright fellow that the problem is the white and the cure is in taking back from them The answer is never found in our form of justice but the Lord's.
The reason that the liberal do not want people to know the truth about the real America is because they want to run God out on a rail. What percent of people in America owned slaves between 1765 and 1865? Most people that I have quised have said 50% to 70%. The truth is 2 1/5% to 3% Most people in American at that time were so poor that they could not afford a team of horses. Let alone a slave. How did slaves get here from Africa? Most say the white European swept in and stole them. The truth is that tribal wars and even Africans selling themselves and their children were the main source. Many say that the Muslims did not have African slaves. They were some of the greatest proponents os slavery but why do you not see African blacks in the Middle East?. The Muslims would casterate their male slaves while still in Africa because it is against the Islamic faith to do so. The males could not produce so there is little evidence.
A white man in a jungle in Africa had about as much chance of survival as a hen at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Why is all this so important? How can one say that this was a Christian nation if most people supported slavery? Would it astound you to know that somewhere between 4000 to 1200 Black people owned slaves? One black man in South Carolina owned 152 slaves and gave money to the Confederacy. Kinda like Lathom in the Bible. Christian ministers of all races should unite, forgive and do not support the likes of Obama, Farrahkan, Jackson and the like. No minister can support the Lord and abortion.
Remember this.. the Egypians were dark the Jews were light so slavery is not a black white issue. It is a God issue.
It is God's hand to rebuke his people. Rejoice in our infermity. Turn to God for the answer not to political justice.
All kinds of submitted articles and comments have been included following Whyte's article. Most of them substantiate what he said as to how a person is "saved" or "born again."
One thing for sure is that when a person is made anew by the power of God, he or she immediately take on a new nature; that of being a seeker of the things of God and a seeker of God's perfect will. Their undying gratitude is to Jesus Christ as being the only way one can truly come to the father.
Hello Ted,
I think you have very good questions and in case nobody has responded already, I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you about the issues you raise.
I completely concur, it seems on the surface that only a sadistic, bossy God would try to scare people into serving Him. Also, it seems contradictory for Him to force people to love Him. After all, you CAN'T force people to love you; love has to come from the heart. But if there are dozens of cars speeding past my young daughter on a highway, for instance. Am I trying to scare her by telling her that if she doesn't look left and right first, she would be hit by one of the cars? Or am I showing my love for her?
I think the real issue is that if Hell is real, warning us to avoid Hell is not sadistic at all, but actually a loving thing.
Now, if I told my daughter that she could avoid being hit by running really fast across the highway, I would not be acting out of love at all, but out of cunning deception. This is what the devil tries to do, to deceive us about the truth so that we would end up in Hell. So the key is, yes there might be a Hell, but what is the true way to avoid it?
In other words, many people might claim to know the way out of Hell, but how do we know which way is right?
This is where Jesus comes in. One of the important things about Jesus' death and resurrection on the cross that separates Him from any other prophet that
claims to speak for God is that the only power that other prophets have, is to "speak" the words of God. But Jesus actually "demonstrated" the word of God. As a matter of fact, the way the Bible puts it Jesus is the word of God itself.
Let me explain this. Think about when our Congress signs bills into law. Before the bills actually get signed into law, they are simply words on paper because they cannot actually *do* anything. But, once they become law, they suddenly become more than just words; they become the demonstration of the words. Example: if a bill gets sent to Congress giving blacks the right to vote, until the bill gets signed into law they are just words. But once they become law, then the words become the truth: blacks will have the right to vote. This becomes the reality; the bill becomes a real-life demonstration of the words. It's the same thing with the words of God.
Prophets have come along and claimed many things about God, but they could not back
up their claim with a demonstration; all they had was a claim. Mohammed has a claim; Buddha has a claim, Krishna has a claim; even atheists have a claim. Christians have a claim. Everybody has a claim, but the only thing to their claim is words. Only Jesus has a claim that was about demonstration, not just words.
How is this? The entire gospel is summed up in the fact that Jesus was the Son of God in the flesh, who died and rose again. This is a show-me gospel;
it wasn't about doctrines or behaviors or religious laws, but rather, it was about actions that happened, demonstrations that could be proven.
So, if we love God, what is the best thing to do to discover his true ways?
Simply ask God from your heart to reveal His Son to you, and reveal whether or not the gospel of Jesus is true. You could say something like, God, I hear this gospel of Jesus, I hear how Jesus is your Son who came to earth to live a perfect life among us, die on a cross and rise again after 3 days
to save me. Please show me if this gospel is true. I love you and I do want to follow you and please you, but I humbly ask you to show me how.
I hope that helps a little bit and I hope that you continue to seek God until you find him!
love
T
Dear DC Heath:
I doubt seriously that Morgan Freeman said that not talking about prejudice is to stop talking about it. Sticking one's head in the sand when a storm approaches has never stopped the storm. It just makes us to blind to do anything to prepare for the storm. Please point me to the exact quote where Freeman said this.
It also seems to me that being upset about the word "black" in a title is childish. Most organizations founded for African-Americans are *not* racially exclusive. They were founded because of racial exclusion. You are welcome to join them if you like. Actually many mainstream organizations that have no color mentioned in the title are all-white and prefer to stay that way... Think of the PGA, USTA... think of the US Senate. Rather than engaging in a spirit of criticism and judgment, it would really serve you well to ask your fellow man (or woman) why they belong to the organizations they belong to and how they came to be.
Finally, it's all well and good to say "be colorblind" after everything has already been divided up by color--mostly in the favor of Europe and American whites. The only reason there is color-consciousness now is because of a history of discrimination. If you want to shut Jackson and Sharpton up, then support justice and compensation for countries, families, and individuals who went unpaid, had their relatives murdered and their churches and businesses burned while local and national governments said it was all legal. US citizens of Japanese descent were paid (yes) by the US government for land the gov't confiscated during WWII. The Garmans had to pay the Jews and the Jews got Israel, even though folks were already living there. So, everybody has been somewhat compensated except for Africans, African-Americans, Indians, the Vietnamese... These groups are banding together under racial terms because they share a common problem. If you want them to be quiet, contribute to the solution. Many theologians believe that we are supposed to help bring about the Kingdom of God, not just sit and wait for it to happen while evil thrives around us.
Think about it.
anonymous:
God is not quick with punishment at all. If you read the Old Testament you would see many examples of His wrath, in some cases immediate death for a sin committed. Since then he has given us grace through the birth of Jesus. It is by grace we are saved, remember its a gift. God does not give us what we deserve, because if he did think about it.... none of us measures up on daily basis. We all fall short of his glory in our lifes. Hell is a reality, not to scare you into beleiving or serving God, but simply the consequences, if you don't.
I can't tell you how refreshing it was to view this article. The truth in print for all to see clearly given. Of course it's all in the word of God but it seems that hardly anyone, especially preachers in the pulpit, are bothering to read and preach from it any longer. The preaching has become motivational to help you function in this life with getting by. But, with the word of God, it will teach you to get by through His strength. Furthermore, it is through His strength alone that we can even live the life of a Christian. Once you accept the Lord as your Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you. As you yield to the Spirit daily, you can have a successful walk in this life as a child of God. Not to mention the fruits of the spirit...joy, peace....so much of what this world is lacking today.
It is so important that we as God's children share this message with those who don't know. We are here on this planet to pick up where Jesus left off. He told His disciples to go TELL. That's exactly what we should be doing...telling others that JESUS SAVES!!!! Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. It is our duty to do the same. This is how we will reap rewards in Heaven. Besides, the only thing you can take to Heaven with you is another soul, nothing else.
Finally, someone mentioned something along the line of basically losing your salvation. There is NOTHING you can do to lose your salvation. IJohn 10:27-28 says..My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall NEVER PERISH, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
IJohn 5:13 says...These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye may have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. God wants you to be saved and be secure in knowing that you are.
For example, you have parents. When you did something wrong, did they say you were no longer their child. Even if they did, the blood is the evidence that you are their child...it can't be changed. Jesus died on the cross for ALL SIN..past, present, and future. If you do wrong, will He have to come back and die again? You are in Him eternally once you accept Him. However, just like when you did wrong by your parents, there were consequences... and so it is with the Lord. You will suffer the conseqences for sin. He also chastises His own. Paul said in Romans...Shall we continue in sin? God forbid. So don't just think that you can get saved and then go on living foolishly. That's why it's so important to let the Holy Spirit rule and reign in your life.
I pray that this will help all who read it.
God Bless!

jennifer that was realy encouraging , especially that part of forgiveness . keep up the good work and lets not tire waiting upon the lord
I feel bad for he person who wrote this more s opinionated thought of the scripture. This is a theological view of universalism and baptist theology. which is once save is always save. jesus said we identify those who are save by doing the will of his father.
You cannot do the will of the Father unless His spirit dwells within you. You are incapable of living for Christ without Christ strength because in our flesh dwelleth no good thing. Without Him, we are nothing. This is why we must receive Him as our Lord and Savior, to receive the Holy Spirit and live for Him...
I can do all things THROUGH CHRIST Phil. 4:19...This is not universalism, not Baptist, just the Book.
