Marvin Sapp, the minister from Grand Rapids, Mich., struck gold with 2007's Thirsty, which spawned the record-breaking R&B crossover hit Never Would Have Made It.
He follows an "if it's not broke, don't fix it" approach on his eighth solo album, Here I Am (* * * ½ out of four).
Sapp returns to Resurrection Life Church, where Thirsty was recorded live, and once again enlists producer Aaron Lindsey (Karen Clark Sheard, Israel & New Breed) and vocal director Myron Butler (Kirk Franklin, Smokie Norful) for his latest set of new material.
It seems that those were all wise choices. In The Best in Me, Sapp has another single pushing him back into the mainstream. The rousing anthem assures listeners that God sees who they really are, regardless of what people might say about them.
The raspy-voiced pastor of the Lighthouse Full Life Center Church peppers his songs with sermons throughout. He never lets his energy wane as he works his way through a dozen songs of hope, comfort and praise. The enthusiastic response of his audience is sure to be echoed by fans everywhere.
