Lifeway Christian Stores Urged to Remove Books 'Contrary to Gospel'; Included are Books by T.D. Jakes and John Hagee

lifeway-logo.jpgA Southern Baptist pastor is urging LifeWay Christian Bookstores to remove a number of books from its shelves that he believes undermine key Christian doctrines.

Channing Kilgore, associate pastor of South Whitwell Baptist Church in Tennessee, introduced a motion at the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) annual meeting last month that called for LifeWay to remove books by teachers T.D. Jakes and John Hagee, any Catholic Bibles, 90 Minutes in Heaven, and The Shack.

SBC president Johnny Hunt ruled Kilgore's motion was not in order because it would have asked the convention to act like trustees. Kilgore says the books he wants removed from LifeWay stores are "contrary to the gospel" and the 2008 Baptist Faith and Message statement.

"For example, in The Shack, it's very unclear and muddled in a lot of its views on the Trinity, the role and person and work of Christ, and the way of salvation," Kilgore believes. "And in regards to T.D. Jakes, he will not come out and use classic, orthodox language in regards to the Trinity -- and that is a cornerstone doctrine of Christianity."

Kilgore notes that in 2005, LifeWay president Thom Rainer said that "LifeWay will not be a business, but a ministry to the church." However, Kilgore contends LifeWay is not ministering to the church by selling the books of "word of faith" teachers and authors who deny the Trinity.

God is not a trinity. He is one Lord. There is no other God besides him. He manifested himself unto many in many ways. He is the Holy Spirit, He is the Father, and he is a son in his own house. He is also a mother. He is a lamb. He is a loin. He is the two nature one in the Constellation. He also manifested himself in finally as a Son (three ways-trinity). But he is not three separate beings. What part of the Bible is difficult for Channing Kilgore? Did he read in the Book of Revelation that God’s name will be changed, and the Son will be no more, because we will forever be with God?

But for right now need the Son. He is the only way to the Father and Jesus stated that the Spirit of God is giving to us by the Son. These three are one. I and my Father are one, said Jesus. Thomas said unto Jesus, my Lord (Son) and my God (Father of creation). Read the Bible Mr Kilgore, you may find that you have some brushing up to do, before you denounce these men or God.

I strongly beg to differ and challenge your flawed theology of “modalism” Mr. Rutledge. On the contrary, the Christian Bible gives plenty of evidence that God is a "Trinity."

Your "scolding" of Mr. Kilgore is inexcusable in light of much proof and corroboration from the Scriptural, historical, ecclesiastical, and soteriological arguments of true and orthodox Christianity.

"You" should take your own advice and read the Bible and accept the following Scriptural Truths (and please don't miss number 3)--the "proof texts" are included at the end:

1. There is "one God." And yet there is "The GodHead" and within the GodHead "there are 'three' 'distinct Persons:'" God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

2. The Son cannot be simply a temporary manifestation of the Father, because "all" things were created through the Son and He is "eternal."

3. A relationship with the true God of the Bible is necessary for salvation.

Scripture Proof Texts: Deuteronomy 4:35, 39; 6:4; 32:39; Isaiah 43:10-11; James 2:19; 2 Peter 1:16-17; John 1:1; John 20:28; Acts 5:3-4; Acts 20:28; Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 1:1-8, 10; Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 23:42; Revelation 1:5-8.

In the name of The Father, and The Son, and The Holy Spirit,

Blessings!
