A North Carolina Superior Court Judge has ruled that church members of a Greensboro congregation are within their rights to put their pastor out of the church.
Senior resident judge Catherine Eagles upheld a temporary restraining order putting Rev. F. Willis Johnson out of the pulpit at the Eugene Street church until at least August.
In a meeting of the church council in April, the group suspended Johnson and asked for his church keys. Johnson, who was suspended with pay, said only a handful of people orchestrated the action.
"My deacon board and the church proper did not participate in that decision-making," Johnson said, adding that "It was not recognized by much of the leadership and the body of the church" which is why Johnson said he continued his duties, prompting the group to seek the restraining order. The church took a vote nearly a month later, on May 17, to uphold the church council's suspension of their leader.
"Nobody wants to fire Rev. Johnson," said attorney Camille Payton, a church trustee, council member, and one of the plaintiffs. "The question is, and has always been, will he adhere to our church's constitution?"
One big sticking point between Johnson and his detractors, it seems, is the construction of the proposed Otis L. Hairston Senior Family Life Enrichment Center, which Johnson said the church cannot afford to build.
"They've done the same thing with every pastor. If they can't get them to resign or buckle them into submission, the next thing to do is to terminate them," contends Johnson.

After so many changes, and church can become pastor-proof.
The pastor is not in position to follow the leading of the sheep, but the sheep are to follow the shepherd as he follows Christ. The finances should be reviewed to ensure that the church can afford to build. If the finances show that they can't, then don't build. If this (getting rid of the pastor) is a reocurring issue the church needs to consider getting new officers.
