It's the 114th day of the Barack Obama presidency. And, 402 years ago today, English colonists arrived off the coast of what is now Virginia to establish a settlement called Jamestown. The rest is American history.
Obama's history for today includes meetings with congressional leaders and an Air Force One trip west to deliver the commencement address at Arizona State University. The president spends the night in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
First up is a meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders, followed by an Obama statement on health care. Later in the morning, Obama hosts a bipartisan group of U.S. senators, to discuss the Supreme Court opening, a subject on which he is getting lots of advice. The president is scheduled to leave town for Arizona around 4:30 p.m.
Among other items on the presidential mind:
Obama's domestic plans are clouded by the worsening fiscal condition of Social Security and Medicare.
The new top general for Afghanistan is drawing scrutiny.
The Obama administration and Russia are negotiating new nuclear weapons cuts even as there is a 15-year backlog of warheads waiting to be dismantled.
Obama delivers the Arizona State and Notre Dame commencements at a time when college students are struggling to repay loans.
