Virginia's governor is criticizing a state police report that calls some universities potential "breeding grounds for terrorists." The document mentions Regent University, the school founded by CBN's Pat Robertson, and hints at two historically black universities.
In between grading papers and preparing for graduation, Regent University professor Robert Stacey is trying to understand how his Christian school could be named in a list of potential breeding grounds for terrorist activity.
Stacey is familiar with the Virginia Fusion Center --the team of police behind the 2009 terrorism threat report that says student groups could be a "radicalization node for almost every type of extremist group."
"In this case, there are no secret or special sources involved. There are no special methods being used," Stacey said. "There is really nothing in this report that one could not find through open sources."
The Virginia Fusion Center's report is more than 200 pages long and and it only singles out by name Regent University, but it does hint at two other schools.
The report points to two historically black colleges in the Richmond area-- there are only two in the area: Virginia Union University and Virginia State University. The report also leads to two historically black schools in the Hampton Roads area-- again, there are only two in the area: Norfolk State University and Hampton University.
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine has called for an investigation into how the report was derived by police.
"Virginia is especially proud to be home to a number of faith-based and historically black colleges and universities," Kaine said Tuesday in a statement.
"I find the depictions in the report misleading and believe it improperly implicates these fine academic institutions," he added.
The leaked Virginia Fusion Center report was originally intended for law enforcement, intellegence and military groups.
