President Trump, still facing criticism for his administration’s response to the pair of hurricanes that ravaged Puerto Rico, gave himself high marks Thursday as he met with the island’s governor, Ricardo Rossello.
“I give ourselves a 10,” Trump said.
At one point, Trump looked directly at Rossello, seated beside him in the Oval Office, and asked: “Did we do a great job?”

President Donald Trump touched down in Puerto Rico on Tuesday and highlighted what he describes as the federal government’s effective response to the storm despite criticism of a sluggish effort since Hurricane Maria devastated the island nearly two weeks ago.
“You can be very proud” of relief and live-saving efforts, Trump told local officials and emergency responders on the ground in San Juan.
Trump, who is accompanied on the trip by first lady Melania Trump, attended a briefing with with San Juan Mayor Yulin Cruz, who has been sharply critical of Trump, and other local officials. On the defensive over the pace of federal help for Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans cleared the way Thursday for more supplies and government cash for the hurricane-ravaged U.S. island.
Trump waived federal restrictions on foreign ships delivering cargo. And House Speaker Paul Ryan said the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account will get a $6.7 billion boost by the end of the week. Trump and his advisers, meanwhile, defended the administration’s response to the devastation on the island, which was hit by Hurricane Maria Sept. 20 with many people left desperate for power, food and other supplies.
