Melania Trump addresses bullying in surprise trip to Michigan

First lady Melania Trump is making good on a promise she made earlier this year to combat childhood bullying, taking a surprise trip Monday to a middle school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a Detroit suburb.

Trump is bringing awareness to a problem that many children are confronted with on a daily basis. She gave brief remarks to students in the cafeteria, encouraging them to make new friends and get to know children outside of their social group. She then sat in on a sixth grade classroom discussion on social and emotional inclusion.

“I always believe that you need to treat each other with respect and kindness and compassion, but also stay true to yourself. Just listen to your heart, but be yourself,” the first lady told students in the classroom.

Speaking separately in the cafeteria, Trump urged students to find new friends to eat lunch with.

“Ask them what they like, what their hobbies are, so nobody becomes sad or stressed and everybody feels included,” she said. “I think it’s important that we choose kindness and compassion.”

Melania Trump harvests, replants White House vegetable garden with local schoolchildren

It’s harvest time for Melania Trump.

The first lady, more at home in Manhattan than among rows of crops, hosted local schoolchildren at the White House on Friday to harvest and replant the vegetable garden Michelle Obama rooted in the South Lawn — carrying on a symbolic piece of the Obamas’ food policy legacy.

“I’m a big believer in healthy eating because it reflects on your mind and your body,” said Melania Trump, surrounded by about a dozen children in the garden on Friday afternoon. “I encourage you to continue to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, so you grow up healthy and take care of yourself.”

After brief remarks, the first lady, dressed in a red plaid shirt, black pants and sneakers, joined the children in harvesting lettuce and kale, peas, radishes, Swiss chard and mustard. They also planted cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, carrots, spinach and kale, the White House said.

At Necker Hospital, Melania Trump visited a ward decorated with images from “The Little Prince,” an iconic French novel written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. She spoke briefly in French to six children, asking how they were and introducing herself before switching to a translator to ask how long they expected to stay. Poll: Melania Trump is more popular than her husband

A new Fox News poll shows that Melania Trump’s popularity continues to rise.

The survey of more than 1,000 registered voters, taken June 25-27, found that 51 percent have a generally favorable view of the first lady.

The figure represents a 16 percent increase from about a year ago.

Compared to that period, the first lady appears to have gained more support across most segments including party lines, genders, and age ranges.

Meanwhile, in the recent poll, only 28 percent reported an unfavorable impression of her; 19 percent indicated they could not say either way.

Her overall figures were more positive than that of President Trump; he had a 47 percent favorable rating and a 51 percent unfavorable rating.

A CNN/ORC poll from March also found that 52 percent of participants viewed the first lady favorably, but these responses were more heavily split along party lines.

CNN noted about the results, “86% of Republicans view the first lady favorably, while just 22% of Democrats feel the same. That margin is a lot wider for Melania Trump than it was for Michelle Obama, who in April 2009 had a favorable rating of 93% among Democrats and 50% among Republicans.”

Melania Trump unable to attend G-20 spouses event due to protests, later meets Vladimir Putin

First lady Melania Trump, who spent the first part of Friday unable to leave her Hamburg residence, was sent in to end the meeting between her husband and Russian leader Vladimir Putin after it ran overtime, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.

President Donald Trump and Putin, Tillerson explained, had such good chemistry that they didn’t want to stop talking even after their scheduled time was up. The task then fell to the first lady to nudge them toward finishing up.

“It didn’t work,” Tillerson told reporters. The meeting between Trump and Putin went on for another hour after that, and lasted more than two hours in full.

Earlier, Melania Trump had been scheduled to partake in a tour of the German Climate Computer Center with the husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. But she was prevented from leaving the residence where she and the president are staying due to security concerns stemming from ongoing protests outside the G-20 summit in Hamburg, the White House said.

Violent protests have raged throughout the northern German city ahead of the international conference, a gathering of the leaders of major economies.
