Tue, Oct 3, 2017: Trump meets Puerto Rican leaders, surveys hurricane damage, distributes aid to residents

President Donald Trump touched down in Puerto Rico on Tuesday and highlighted what he describes as the federal government’s effective response to the storm despite criticism of a sluggish effort since Hurricane Maria devastated the island nearly two weeks ago.

“You can be very proud” of relief and live-saving efforts, Trump told local officials and emergency responders on the ground in San Juan.

Trump, who is accompanied on the trip by first lady Melania Trump, attended a briefing with with San Juan Mayor Yulin Cruz, who has been sharply critical of Trump, and other local officials. 3:30 pm: Meets with Governor Kenneth Mapp of the US Virgin Islands; Ward Room – USS Kearsarge

3:50 pm: Participates in a briefing with senior military personnel, Governor Ricardo Rosselló of Puerto Rico, and Governor Kenneth Mapp of the US Virgin Islands; Ward Room – USS Kearsarge

4:10 pm: Participates in a greeting with the Navy and Marine Corps; Flight Deck – USS Kearsarge

5:05 pm: Departs San Juan, Puerto Rico

8:55 pm: Arrives White House
