President Trump and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy committed to fighting various international threats to democratic values during a joint news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Both leaders acknowledged recent provocations from North Korea and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s regime, as well as radical terrorist groups as threats to democracy in both Spain and the U.S.
“Together Spain and the United States hope for peace,” Mr. Trump said.
Rajoy echoed the president’s sentiments.
“Combatting terrorism was something we talked about at length,” Rajoy said of the working lunch he held with Mr. Trump earlier Tuesday, prior to the conference. The Spanish prime minister said that “both countries agree” on counter terrorism efforts, but added that they need to “increase commitment” in this realm. President Donald Trump is welcoming Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to the White House days before a crucial secession vote in his country.
The regional government in Catalonia is holding a binding referendum Sunday on separating from Spain. But the Spanish government insists such a vote is illegal and promises it won’t take place. Catalonia is one of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions. Its capital is the Mediterranean port city of Barcelona, a favorite for tourists.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert recently said the U.S. has no position on the referendum.
She says the U.S. will work with any government or entity that comes out of the vote.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday she had nothing to add to the State Department’s position on the issue.

I’ve asked lawmakers of both parties to join us to discuss our framework for tax cuts and tax reform before it will be released tomorrow.
