President Trump presented the Purple Heart to a wounded service member during a visit Saturday to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington.
First lady Melania Trump also attended the brief ceremony, where the president pinned the medal on Sgt. First Class Alvaro Barrientos’ lapel, according to a pool report.
“When I heard about this I wanted to do it myself,” Trump said before taking a picture with Barrientos and his wife Tammy. “Congratulations. Tremendous.”
Barrientos was wounded during a deployment in Afghanistan, and was awarded the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained, a White House official said.
