Tue, Apr. 4, 2017: Trump meets with Gov. Ralph Torres of the Northern Mariana Islands

While Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo harshly criticized the federal government at a Rotary Club of Guam meeting yesterday, his counterpart from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands proudly shared having met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

“I met with President Trump and his Chief of Staff Reince Priebus in the Oval Office to discuss the importance of our CNMI visa waiver program and the (foreign contract workers) program,” CNMI Gov. Ralp Torres said on his Facebook page yesterday. The meeting took place Wednesday, Guam time.

“The president has assured me that he will make sure our economy continues to grow so we can continue to address our challenges and provide more economic opportunities for you and your families,” Torres said.

Tue, Apr. 4, 2017: Trump meets with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, discusses how to pay for border wall

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Costa Mesa, said his idea to help pay for a border wall was well- received by President Donald Trump during a 45-minute meeting at the White House on Tuesday, April 4.

“He was especially keen on my proposal to create a new visa program that would help finance the border wall and protect our country’s sovereign territory by charging wealthy foreigners to become citizens of the United States,” Rohrabacher said in an emailed statement. No additional details about the plan were available at press time.

Described as a “wide-ranging discussion on foreign and domestic issues” with Trump, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and strategist Steven Bannon, the meeting specifically included discussion of building partnerships with other countries “menaced” by “Islamist terrorism,” according to Rohrabacher’s statement.

The U.S. economy has so far proven to be a point of pride for a presidency that has otherwise gotten off to a rocky start. Trump inherited a stable economy from former President Barack Obama, an economic recovery that’s heading toward its eighth year. But Trump believes he can do more for business.

Trump and several of his top aides emphasized plans to cut red tape and jumpstart infrastructure projects at Tuesday’s meeting, while also previewing for the CEOs other priorities that include shortening flight times for airplanes, increasing the power grid’s efficiency and targeting programs to improve job training.
