Three of the Weirdest Things Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Has Advocated for and Wants You to Support Too

Democratic Representative from New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivers remarks during a press conference on deportation at Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, USA, 07 February 2019. During the press conference Representatives called for a cutoff of funding to ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (US Customs and Border Protection).

The youngest member of Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been making waves since she appeared on the national political scene last year.

The 29-year-old Latina Democratic-Socialist from the Bronx is known for her appeal with millennials and use of Twitter to troll her critics — mostly pundits and Republicans — and use of Instagram to reach her fans.

Since her win over longtime Democrat congressman Joe Crowley in the 2018 primary catapulted her to national prominence, Ocasio-Cortez has become a household name. It has been noted that as a result of her rise and massive following she has already helped define the agenda of the modern Democratic Party, arguably nudging it even further to the left.

And some of the things she has advocated for have been on the receiving end of considerable criticism and mockery.

Here are three recent examples, including two that were outlined in the Green New Deal.

1. Urging followers to donate to queer, ‘gender-diverse’ activist group

Days after being sworn in, the New York congresswoman tweeted to her over 2.5 million followers that it was a “good moment to support the queer community,” specifically the U.K.-based group Mermaids which was livestreaming an event that she tweeted out.

Mermaids is a nonprofit transgender advocacy organization that has been instrumental in shaping education protocols and other public policies across the U.K. to enshrine transgenderism in culture. The group is headed by Susie Green, who when her son was 16 years old, she took him to Thailand to undergo a sex change operation.

After the livestream concluded, Mermaids revealed on Twitter that they had raised over $275,000 (£213,000), in part due to Ocasio-Cortez’s involvement.

The group has amassed enough influential power in the U.K. that even law enforcement has targeted its critics. As The Christian Post reported last year, feminist activist Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, also known as Posie Parker, was interrogated by police for tweeting her disapproval of Green’s decision to take her son to Thailand for a sex change operation. She was specifically targeted for having tweeted the word “castration.”

2. The Green New Deal: Getting rid of ‘farting cows’ in 10 years

Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal,” sponsored in the Senate by Massachusetts Democrat Edward Markey, is an environmental proposal that calls for the elimination of carbon emissions and transitioning the United States to solely renewable energy in 10 years. The plan is billed an effort to combat the threat of climate change.

An actual phrase in the proposal reads: “We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”
