Suspect in Seven-year-old’s Slaying Says ‘Nightclub Fight’ Led to Jazmine’s Senseless Murder and That He ‘Shot at Her Car Thinking It Was Part of a Spat – Then Found Out He’d Killed Her by Mistake When Watching the News the Next Day’

Prosecutors believe a fight at a nightclub just hours earlier led to the senseless drive-by shooting of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes.

Suspect Eric Black Jr appeared in front of a judge in Houston, Texas, on Monday afternoon as the first indication of a motive in the murder was shared with the court.

The 20-year-old sat slumped in his chair, stared forward and remained silent for the entire duration of the hearing, which was attended by his mother and other family members.

Prosecutors told the court the slaying on December 30 unfolded after Black and another man mistook the car she was in for one belonging to individuals they had fought with.

Black told investigators he and his alleged accomplice, who has not yet been formally identified, did not realize it was the wrong vehicle.

It wasn’t until the next day when they watched the news and saw a little girl had been shot and killed that they realized they had opened fire at the wrong car, prosecutors say.
