TEXT: Matthew 6:19-21

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Jesus tells us not to build up earthly treasure for ourselves on earth, but rather in Heaven, for a very specific reason. He is not trying to be a killjoy or prevent us from enjoying things on earth. In fact, He wants us to enjoy the life that He has given us with all the benefits that come with it. But, He does not want our hearts to be tied up in earthly treasure because earthly treasure will let us down. Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Current events are replete with the stories of people who put their trust in earthly riches and, in the end, found that those riches failed them. The old adage that “money can’t buy happiness” is still true. According to a Wall Street Journal article, “A study co-funded by the Gates Foundation portrays the ultra-rich as lost souls burdened by the fears, worries, and family distortions of too much money.” The study found that “respondents turned out to be a generally dissatisfied lot, whose money contributed to deep anxieties involving love, work, and family. Indeed, they are frequently dissatisfied even with their sizable fortunes. Most of them still do not consider themselves financially secure.”

This is the kind of pain that Jesus wants to save us from. This is why He tells us to make sure our treasure is in Heaven, not on Earth. John MacArthur wrote in his commentary on this passage, “Jesus points out that a person’s cherished possessions and his deepest motives and desires are inseparable. They will either both be earthly or both be heavenly. It is impossible to have one on earth and the other in heaven. As always, the heart must be right first. In fact, if the heart is right, everything else in life falls into its proper place. The person who is right with the Lord will be generous and happy in his giving to the Lord’s work. By the same token, a person who is covetous, self-indulgent, and stingy has good reason to question his relationship with the Lord.”

Today, we must ask ourselves where our heart is. If our heart is in Heaven — if we see the Lord’s work as most important — then our treasure will be safe. But, if our heart is on earth — if we see ourselves and our own material progress as most important — then our treasure is quite insecure, and we will learn the tragic lesson that so many others have had to endure: that money and material possessions, no matter how much we obtain, cannot satisfy and will devastate us in the end.

William Cowper said:

No more I ask or hope to find
Delight or happiness below;
Sorrow may well possess the mind
That feeds where thorns and thistles grow.

The joy that fades is not for me,
I seek immortal joys above;
There glory without end shall be
The bright reward of faith and love.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
