Ta-Nehisi Coates, the national correspondent for The Atlantic and one of the publication’s most recognizable voices, has announced that he will be leaving the outlet on Friday. Coates is reportedly not heading to any other publications. “It was this or nothing,” Coates told The Washington Post. “I didn’t have anything else.” In a memo to staff, Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine’s editor in chief, said that Coates has been through “significant changes” over the past few years. “He’s told me that he would like to take some time to reflect on these changes, and to figure out the best path forward, both as a person and as a writer,” he wrote. Coates was lauded by Goldberg as “one of America’s most celebrated writers.”
