On Saturday, news trickled out about former secretary of state John Kerry acting as an unofficial foreign agent by engaging in “shadow diplomacy” in a desperate attempt to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. The controversial, oft-disputed deal was heralded as a major foreign policy achievement of the Obama administration. According to CNN,
Over recent months, Kerry has been holding meetings and speaking with big players in the Iran nuclear agreement, who, like Kerry, do not want President Donald Trump to withdraw the US from the deal, The Boston Globe reported. Citing a person briefed on the meetings, the Globe reported that Kerry had met with Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at the United Nations in New York two weeks ago, their second meeting in about two months, to discuss ways of keeping the deal limiting Iran’s nuclear weapons program intact. The former secretary of state also met last month with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, separately sat down with French President Emmanuel Macron in both Paris and New York, and spoke on the phone with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, the source told the Globe. Kerry has also quietly lobbied members of Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, placing dozens of phone calls in recent weeks….The Trump administration faces a May 12 deadline to decide whether to continue waiving sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the 2015 Iran deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin made an appearance on the network’s “Fox & Friends” show Saturday morning to deliver her perspective on the story. Malkin argued that Kerry should be prosecuted for trying to salvage the Iran deal and preserve Obama’s “legacy” by operating as a foreign agent while failing to register as one. To be fair, since a former U.S. ambassador to Russia has said that shadow campaigns like John Kerry’s are carried out fairly regularly, Malkin’s suggested prosecution of Kerry would seemingly be overkill if carried out. Whatever the case, it would do well for someone to step in and remind Mr. Kerry that Barack Obama was granted eight years in power by the American people. Now, it is Trump’s turn to provide leadership for the country, no matter how misguided you think he may be. Many agree that Obama is a great person, and nobody can take that away from him; however, a great president he was not, especially during his second term. Taking surreptitious actions to undermine the Trump presidency only serves to prove the point that Obama and his administration (of which you were a part) did not do enough meaningful work to better the future that could stand on its own. The time has come to leave Obama’s legacy to the history books.

MALKIN: “Yeah. There’s a word for this. It’s called treachery. I believe that John Kerry should be prosecuted for failing to register as a foreign agent of which he has been acting for many years, Ed. Now to be meeting with foreign leaders and especially the leader of a country whose operating motto is ‘death to America’? This is amazing. First of all, it’s not just the Iranian mullahs he has been meeting with. He met secretly and privately with Macron to talk about salvaging the Iran deal. There is an entire network of people – all of these left wingers, progressives under the Obama Administration – who are trying to salvage his quote, unquote, legacy. They have formed this group called Diplomacy Works. Who are the real collude-rs? They are right here in front of us. Who are the ones who are trying to get foreign governments to meddle to undermine our president. Hello John Kerry.”
