Barack Obama has never been shy about dancing in public. But in a new clip from David Letterman’s upcoming hourlong Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, the former president says his groove has always embarrassed his daughter Sasha. One way to mitigate the embarrassment? Obama says he uses his “dad moves.”
In the clip, Obama recalls musician Prince’s performance at the White House in June 2015. When the Grammy winner invited Sasha to the floor to dance, Obama says he was “surprised” that she pulled him up with her.
“Then Sasha pulls me up, which surprises me because she always mocks my dancing, but I have dad moves,” he says. The key to those moves, he says, is “staying in the pocket.”
“I think everybody in here knows dads who get out of the pocket. And they’re trying stuff that they can’t really pull off,” Obama says. “You know, they start doing, like, karate kicks and all kinds of stuff,” he explains, before asking whether Letterman, who has a son, karate kicks as a dance move.
My Next Guest Needs No Introduction premieres Friday at 12:01 a.m. PT on Netflix.
