TEXT: Psalm 78:26-31
26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.
As we have mentioned many times before, the sin of gluttony is one that the church doesn’t take seriously. This is probably due to the fact that many of us are guilty of this sin. But it also has to do with the fact that it is such an easy sin to slip into. We start out eating reasonably, but we begin to desire more and different foods, and it is easier not to say no. Even those churches that do have an emphasis on exercise and healthy living will probably never call out the sin of gluttony among their members.
But God isn’t afraid to call it out. In fact, in His reaction to the gluttony of the children of Israel which we are reminded of in this passage, we see that He responds to it just as harshly as he does to the other sins of the children of Israel. Matthew Poole writes that God’s judgment was poured out on those who “were most desirous of this food, fed most eagerly upon it, and grew fatter by it, and least suspected their own danger.”
This is how gluttony, like all sin, creeps up on us. It is pleasurable to eat good food. Because it makes us feel good, we don’t think about how dangerous it can be. And, it is easy to obtain, so, like drug addicts, we return to that pleasurable experience again and again. We don’t think about the consequences until we get sick or realize that we have put on way too many pounds. Maybe you are not yet overweight or obese, but you are a glutton. You should learn from others in your family and older individuals who have suffered from gluttonous behavior so that you can avoid the diseases and the possible early death that ensue.
PRACTICAL STEPS ON INTERMITTENT FASTING: Today we will begin looking at the Leangains model of intermittent fasting. Martin Berkhan, one of the biggest promoters of this version, writes: “How does Leangains differentiate itself from some other intermittent fasting based diets? My general position on the fasted phase is that it should last through the night and during the morning hours. Ideally the fast should then be broken at noon or shortly thereafter if you arise at 6-7 AM like most people. Afternoons and evenings are usually spent in the fed state. However, the fast could also also be broken later in the day depending on your personal preferences and daily routine. I personally tend to break the fast as late as 4-6 PM since I work well into the night and rise later than most people with normal jobs.”
PRACTICAL ADVICE ON EATING RIGHT: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson continues sharing why he recommends not using any vegetable oils. He writes, “The model for the Mediterranean diet harks back to the 1950’s and before when people, especially in the island of Crete, were virtually free of heart disease – despite their indulgence in olive oil. This was not because of the olive oil, but because they ate primarily vegetables and whole grains, a little fish and got lots of exercise. Today, their consumption of olive oil has remained the same (if not increased), but their consumption of whole plant foods has plummeted, as has their exercise. As a result, heart disease and obesity have skyrocketed.”

5. Will fasting cause muscle loss?
All weight loss methods can cause muscle loss, that is why it is important to lift weights and keep protein intake high. One study shows that intermittent fasting causes less muscle loss than regular calorie restriction.
Now, in this series, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
