TEXT: Matthew 6:1-4

1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

From Jesus’ teaching in this passage, we have talked about how we ought not to do our good deeds — not before others to be seen of them and not to gain any kind of earthly applause or reward. Then, how are we to give to the poor and help those in need? Jesus says, “When thou doest alms (or works of charity), let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.”

Of course, our hands do not have minds of their own. Jesus is making use of hyperbole to stress the confidentiality with which we ought to do good deeds. If it is possible for the right hand to give without the left hand knowing what is given, then that is how the Christian should give. Our giving ought to be an act of modesty, not ostentation, knowing that anything we give is by the grace of God who saw fit to supply it to us — probably so we would, in fact, give it to others. Another way of stating Jesus’ injunction is: when you give money, don’t hold it in your right hand while counting it with your left. Just give it freely, quickly, and without fanfare, and let God do with it as He will!

Don’t dwell on the gifts you give or the charity you extend to others. Either God wants you to help or He doesn’t. Don’t try to make a poor, needy soul jump through hoops to receive aid from God’s people. Charles Spurgeon said, “Give by stealth as scarcely to know it thyself; think so little of it with regard to thyself that thou shalt scarcely know that thou hast done it. Do it unto God; let Him know it. Do not let what you have done be so known, even to yourself as to become the subject of self-approbation [or self-approval]. Do not count over what has been given, rather go on to give more.” If you err, err on the side of charity.

If our charity is delivered “in secret” — or not with the intent of being seen by others, Jesus says, “Thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.” Sometimes, these rewards may come in this life, and it will be obvious that God alone lifted us up in the sight of others because we did not try to lift ourselves up. But, more importantly, all of God’s secret alms givers will be rewarded eternally in Heaven.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
