ABC might not want to hear how Michael Strahan spent his summer vacation.
Executives from the network’s news division, The New York Post’s Page Six reports, are ‘really upset with him’ that he didn’t interrupt a Greek summer vacation to return to Good Morning America amid the network’s coverage of Hurricane Harvey.
‘ABC News asked Strahan to come home from his vacation,’ an insider told the paper. ‘He’s from Houston. But he refused and is still floating around on a yacht in Greece somewhere.’
But Strahan’s rep told the newspaper that executives didn’t ask Strahan to return from his vacation, and that the hometown hero ‘is headed [to Houston] next week and will help in any way that he can’ when he returns to the air on Tuesday.
The staff for the program are said to be in disbelief that he hasn’t returned amid the unprecedented ravage of rainfall in the country’s fourth-largest city, as he was on his second week of a vacation aboard a yacht, insiders told the publication.
Other notable television journalists, including CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Strahan’s GMA colleague Robin Roberts, returned from their slated off-time to commandeer broadcasts for their respective networks.
Insiders told the paper that ABC execs hadn’t requested Roberts come back early, but the veteran TV personality did so on her own accord.
Strahan, who hails from Houston, has been in ‘direct contact with his family’, his rep told the publication.
‘Thankfully they are doing fine,’ the rep said.
GMA senior executive producer Michael Corn said he was in contact daily with the NFL star-turned-broadcaster, who made it ‘very clear he wanted to be part of the coverage.
‘We decided the best plan was for him to lead the charge covering the recovery,’ Corn said.
Strahan, according to TMZ, is one of many stars linked to an upcoming TV fundraiser for the embattled city, along with Jamie Foxx, Hilary Duff, Reese Witherspoon and Blake Shelton.
Strahan took to social media earlier this week to send a message of hope, writing, ‘To my hometown of Houston and everyone there…I Love You and am praying for your safety. H-TOWN LOVE!’
From 1993 to 2007, Michael played on the New York Giants football team.
He co-hosted Live! with Kelly Ripa from 2008 to 2016, before leaving for his current position as a co-anchor at Good Morning America.
Aside from his sports accomplishments, he’s also acted in Magic Mike XXL, Are We There Yet? and the TV series Brothers.
