An amateur mix martial arts fighter died following a bout Saturday night in Louisville.
WAVE 3 News reports Donshay White, 37, collapsed after a bout at Hardrock MMA 90 at Expo Five, according to BluegrassMMA.com. The site reported the fight was stopped after White failed to protect himself. White walked backstage where he later became unresponsive.
“He looked like he was exhausted when he came through the door,” Adrien Jenkins, who attended event, said. “But once he was on the ground, there was no expression, he wasn’t breathing.”
The website states that White was given CPR and transported KentuckyOne Health Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital where he died.
It was his first bout since November 2015, according to Bluegrass MMA.
“They gave everyone the option to leave and some guys took it,” Branden Bishop, who was scheduled to fight in the main event, told WAVE 3 News on Sunday. “And others decided they wanted to continue with the fight, so the fight card went on.”
Bishop said as his fight approached, a second medical emergency happened. That fighter recovered, but the last ambulance at the event took the fighter to the hospital, forcing the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Commission to cancel the rest of the competition, including the main event.
