TEXT: Revelation 22:1-7
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
The Free State of Glory (Part 28)
Verses 6 and 7 of our passage begin what commentators have called the “epilogue” of Revelation. From here on out, John affirms the message that he received from Jesus and challenges saints to live in light of “the things which must shortly be done.” Dr. Ed Hindson writes, “The concept of ‘witness’ or ‘testimony’ is central to John’s writings. The combination of ‘faithful and true’ appears four times in the Revelation. The threefold witness of the angel, John, and Jesus is intended to assure the reader of the validity and authenticity of the prophecy of the Revelation. It is this assurance that will be necessary to encourage future believers to hold true to their testimonies.”
How wonderful it is to have some assurance in this world of uncertainty! Imagine holding a thick book that appears to be full of blank pages. But if you flip to the very end, you will see that the ending has already been written. Today, we are living in the blank pages of history. In politics, in the economy, in relations between nations, in everyday life, there is a lot of uncertainty. Many in the news have commented that we can barely digest one breaking news story before there is another one demanding our attention. No one knows what tomorrow brings.
But, in God’s Word, we find the endgame for the world. Of course, some would say that no one can know how the world will end — especially with so many blank pages between now and then. How can the Revelation be accurate? How can John’s writing be “faithful and true”? We know the Revelation is true because “the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must be done.” Robert Thomas comments, “The relation of the Epilogue to the Prologue demonstrate cohesion and rationality of thought that make this work a superior literary production. This is not the work of some wild-eyed fanatic. Nor is it the babblings of some incoherent idiot. The Revelation is the finest apocalyptic literature ever written. It is purely inspired genius from start to finish.”
The “genius” behind the Revelation is God Himself, infinitely wise and ultimately trustworthy. It is He and His Son who claim the title “Faithful and True.” It is they who will pull the strings of the world and conduct the orchestra of the end times. No matter what history is written on the blank pages between now and then, it will all end up happening just as God says it will. And what’s more? It will happen “shortly.” The term means soon or suddenly. We don’t know when or how the Revelation will start to be played out on the world stage. But we do know that the pieces are being put in place even now, and when the events of the last days begin to happen, they will take the world by storm — beginning with the Rapture, the vanishing of saints from the earth. That is something we can look forward to happening shortly.
One hymnist wrote:
When our Lord comes in glory and we’re raptured to His side,
When that bright and glorious moment we shall see,
We shall know our dear Bridegroom as He comes to take His Bride,
And He’ll know the Bride He’s loved so tenderly.
Even now in the Spirit He reveals Himself to us,
And His Person dear we’ve learned to recognize.
But our eyes shall behold Him—O what rapture glorious
When we gaze on Him unveiled in the skies!
In the meetings of the churches He’s unveiled increasingly—
O the joy unspeakable and glory too!
As the meetings grow higher we’re expecting soon to see
The full glory of our Lord come into view.
If you want to be taken up in the rapture to live in Heaven with Christ and God, allow me to share with you how you can place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
