TEXT: Matthew 4:3-10:.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
After preaching the Gospel every day for 367 days straight throughout the 2016 presidential campaign season, I am preaching the Gospel every day throughout the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s term. If you think a new president being in office is the only thing needed to save America and ‘make America great again’, you are woefully deceived. The church must follow through and “keep the main thing the main thing: and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,’ and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to ‘pray without ceasing’ for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders.” So, we encourage you to pray for the new president, but not to get caught up in the political happenings like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord. And that is what this campaign is all about.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 84, day 454 since Jan. 1, 2016.
Rick Warren said, “Every time you defeat a temptation, you become more like Jesus!”
The first temptation that Jesus experienced targeted Him physically. Because Jesus was physically weak, Satan thought he could get an easy victory. But Jesus won that battle with the Word of God. Then, Satan targeted Jesus’ personal trust in His Heavenly Father. He pushed Jesus to test God, but Jesus pushed back with the word of God and won. Now, Satan tempts Him with power. He takes Jesus “up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.”
How was the devil able to offer the Son of God all the kingdoms of the world? The Bible says Satan is the “god of this age” and that the “whole world lieth in the lap of the wicked one.” When Adam sinned, he turned his dominion over the Earth (which God had given him) over to Satan. Since then, the world system is synonymous with Satan. To some degree, the devil has control over the nations of the world. We know that, one day, “all the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and of Christ.” But, for the time being, God allows Satan to exert his influence over the world.
So, Satan dangles not only the kingdoms of the world, but “their glory” before Jesus. He says, “Worship me, and you can have all this.” Has the devil ever dangled something shiny in front of you? If so, he has only shown you the “glory” part. D.A. Carson said, “there is something that Satan did NOT show Jesus. He showed Jesus the splendor of the nations without showing the sin of the nations.” The devil was trying to get Jesus to take a shortcut to the will of God. He was saying, “I can give you glory without suffering. I can give you power without pain. Forget the cross. Bow down to me and you can get the kingdoms of this world just as God the Father has promised you.”
How does Jesus respond? He says,”Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Notice: Jesus does not reject the offer of power and dominion. He rejects the means by which Satan promises to give Him these things. The glory of the nations rightfully belongs to Jesus, no doubt. But God had ordained a specific path by which Jesus would obtain them. And that path led through the cross and the grave. Even when Peter suggested that Jesus bypass the cross, Jesus said to him, “Get thee behind me, Satan.” Jesus’ example demonstrates that God has blessings in store for us, but He requires that we go through the struggle first.
Horatio R. Palmer wrote:
You’re starting, my child, on life’s journey,
Along the grand highway of life;
You’ll meet with a thousand temptations—
Each city with evil is rife.
This world is a stage of excitement,
There’s danger wherever you go;
But if you are tempted to weakness,
Have courage, my child, to say No!
In courage, my child, lies your safety,
When you the long journey begin,
Your trust in a heavenly Father
Will keep you unspotted from sin.
Temptations will go on increasing,
As streams from a rivulet flow;
But if you’d be true to your Savior,
Have courage, my child, to say No!
Be careful in choosing companions,
Seek only the brave and the true,
And stand by your friends when in trial,
Never changing the old for the new;
And when by false friends you are tempted
The taste of the evil to know,
With firmness, with patience and kindness,
Have courage, my child, to say No!
If you are ready to be empowered to resist temptation by placing your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
