The Free State of Glory (Part 12)

TEXT: Revelation 21:9-14

9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The Free State of Glory (Part 12)

An angel shows John the New Jerusalem “coming down from God out of Heaven.” This glorious city is described as “the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” It is the people, the bride, who make the city what it is. But it is God who makes the people what they are.

The new Jerusalem descends out of Heaven “having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.” No city on earth will be able to compare to the new Jerusalem. Everyone who trusts Christ as Savior will take part in the riches of this city. Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy Zuck write: “The overall impression of the city as a gigantic brilliant jewel compared to jasper, clear as crystal, indicates its great beauty. John was trying to relate it to what might be familiar to his readers. However, it is evident that his revelation transcends anything that can be experienced.”

In light of what is in store for us, we ought to cease trying to build our little Jerusalems here on earth, always striving for temporary ease and material possessions. We ought to leave such things for those who don’t know Jesus because this world is all they get. Rick Warren said, “Realizing that life on earth is just a temporary assignment should radically alter your values. Eternal values, not temporal ones, should become the deciding factors for your decisions. It is a fatal mistake to assume that God’s goal for your life is material prosperity or popular poppularity, as the world defines it. The abundant life has nothing to do with material abundance, and faithfulness to God does not guarantee success in a career or even in ministry. Never focus on temporary crowns.”

More important than the physical properties of the city, which John describes in terms of jewels and precious stones, is the fact that the “glory of God” will abide in the New Jerusalem. In the Old Testament, the glory of God was symbolic of God’s presence. On Mt. Sinai, God’s glory was displayed by dark clouds, thunder, and lightning. On their journeyings through the wilderness, the children of Israel were accompanied by God’s presence in the form of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. At the dedication of Solomon’s Temple, God showed His approval by filling the structure with His glory. At Pentecost, God’s glory was seen in the tongues of fire that sat on the Apostles and the first disciples.

These glimpses of God’s glory in the earth are, in the words of one hymnwriter, just a “foretaste of glory divine.” In the New Jerusalem, we will be in the presence of God’s glory 24/7. We will never be separated from God nor He from us. Everything we do in Heaven will be done in His presence. We will be in constant fellowship with the Almighty. All of His goodness and grace and glory will surround us and fill us at all times, for this is the essence of Heaven: mankind restored to the permanent presence of God.

One hymnist wrote:

God in heaven hath a treasure,
Riches none may count or tell;
Hath a deep eternal pleasure,
Christ the Son, He loveth well.

God in tongues of fire descending,
Chosen vessels thus to fill
With the treasure never ending,
Ever spent—unfailing still.

Naught of earth to cloud the glory,
Naught of self the light to dim,
Telling forth His wondrous story,
Emptied to be filled with Him.

If you want to join Jesus Christ and His “bride” in the New Jerusalem, allow me to share with you how you can place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation from sin and the punishment of sin:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
