A 15-year-old boy and his 11-year-old his sister were shot dead while home alone during a home invasion in Georgia on Saturday morning.

Siblings Daveon and Tatiyana Coates were home with several other children, aged between six and 15, when the deadly home invasion took place around 5am.

Daveon was one of the oldest children in the home at the time when an unknown number of people entered the home on Libby Lane before later escaping.

The other children inside at the time were not harmed.

It appears two families live in the house located in Jonesboro but no parents were there at the time of the shootings because they were reportedly out for the night.

Another child inside the home called 911 to report the home invasion and when officers arrived they found Daveon and Tatiyana dead, according to CBS46.

Neighbors reportedly heard gunfire at the time and also called police.

The children’s parents are believed to have been socializing at another location as the tragic incident unfolded.

Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register described the incident as both tragic and senseless.

‘It’s very tragic. It’s senseless,’ Register told WSB-TV.

‘Not only in the Atlanta area, in the country we have to do something about violence.’

A neighbor told CBS46 the family has lived in the home for about two to three months and described them as generally friendly.

Neighbor Joy Shilengay told 11Alive that prior to the family moving in, it had sat vacant for two years.

She said she would often see the family and children outside playing and noted this is the first time anything like this has happened in the typically quiet neighborhood.

‘I’ve been living here for three years and nothing like this has ever happened,’ she told 11Alive.

‘But in this day and age, anything is possible. People don’t care.’

A motive is still not clear in the shooting and Register said there are no suspects at this time, but police are investigating several leads.

Police are also investigating whether anything was stolen from the home.
