Carly Fiorina appears to be on a roll, which means her tenure as CEO of Hewlett-Packard — and her dismissal from that job — will likely get heightened scrutiny.

“Yes, I was fired,” Fiorina told CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “I’ve been open about that since the day it happened. I was fired in a boardroom brawl. And you know why? Because I challenged the status quo.”

Many analysts believe Fiorina clearly won a Thursday debate among the seven Republican candidates who did not qualify for that night’s prime-time session.

Fiorina hopes the publicity will improve her polls and boost her into the second main debate next month. She is casting her stormy tenure at HP as an asset and an example of leadership.

“When you challenge the status quo, when you lead, you make enemies,” Fiorina told CNN. “It’s a way so few people lead. But guess what? It is the kind of leadership we need now in the Oval Office.”
