Blake Hannett, 15-Year-Old Illinois Boy, Shoots and Kills himself on FaceTime, Family says It Was an Accident

A boy shot on FaceTime has been identified as Blake Hannett, a 15-year-old boy from Lynwood, Illinois. The teen was reportedly chatting online with a friend on Thursday evening when he shot himself in the head with a.38 caliber gun. He died at the scene of the shooting as a result of the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police who responded to the home for a report of shots fired discovered his lifeless body at his desk. The weapon had fallen to the floor beneath his chair.

According to ABC 11 Eyewitness News, Hannett’s family believes the boy was on FaceTime when he heard a noise in the home. The family said he took a weapon that was kept in the home and went looking for a potential intruder after hearing the noise. When he returned to his bedroom, he laid the gun down on a surface and it accidentally discharged.

Hannett’s family said the boy’s shooting death on FaceTime was an accident. However, Cook County Medical Examiner has ruled the death a suicide, reported New York Daily News. It is unknown whether his friend witnessed the boy’s fatal shooting on FaceTime. If so, how much did he see? Police have declined to release that information to the media.
