First, today, let’s look at some Signs of His Coming in the news.

The disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 24:3, “What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus Christ then went on to give them (and us) clear signs that show us when we can begin to expect to see the coming of the Lord and the end of the world. Those signs include:

Looking at world events through the lens of the Word of God, let’s look at some headlines from today’s news that point to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to USA Today, The Pentagon press secretary said on Tuesday that the airstrikes in Syria disrupted major terror attacks planned against the U.S. and western targets. Rear Admiral John Kirby said the Kho-ra-san terror group, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terror organization, had established training camps in Syria and had been developing improvised explosive devices for use in attacks. The airstrikes successfully hit their camp. Kho-ra-san was “nearing the execution phase” of the attacks against European or American targets. Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the government had been tracking the group for some time, and added, “We believe that attack planning was imminent.”

Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the Associated Press, for President Barack Obama, the participation of five Arab nations in airstrikes in Syria has shifted the tenor of his three-day diplomatic mission at the United Nations, allowing him to use the unexpected cooperation to mobilize reluctant other nations to join the fight against Islamic State militants. While officials said the timing of the strikes was not intended to coincide with the start of the annual U.N. gathering, the military action quickly became a focal point as Obama and other world leaders arrived in New York. Even with the actions from Arab nations, the U.S. is seeking to rally other partners for future cooperation, particularly Turkey, a U.S. ally and NATO member. President Obama will also chair an unusual U.N. Security Council meeting Wednesday at which members are expected to adopt a resolution that would require all countries to prevent the recruitment and transport of would-be foreign fighters preparing to join terrorist groups such as the Islamic State.

Third, today, under the Sign category of DISEASE & EPIDEMICS — According to Reuters, researchers said on Tuesday that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa could infect 20,000 people as soon as early November unless rigorous infection control measures are implemented, and might “rumble on” for years in a holding pattern. In an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, experts from the World Health Organization and Imperial College said that infections will continue climbing exponentially unless patients are isolated, contacts traced and communities enlisted.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Bloomberg News, Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet after it flew over the Golan Heights, the first such incident in almost 30 years and the neighbors’ most serious clash since the start of Syria’s civil war. The plane was downed by a U.S.-made Patriot missile fired by Israeli military personnel, and the crew ejected over Syrian territory across the Golan frontier.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED PERSECUTION — According to International Christian Concern, more than 200 police officers raided a house church in China on Sunday. More than 100 church members, including children, were arrested during the Sunday service in Foshan City. As of Monday evening, more than 24 hours later, 30 parishioners still remained in police custody. Local believers told ICC that the church was raided without any warning. The police left behind a notice stating that the church members were detained for conducting an “illegal gathering.”

The Bible says in Revelation 19:17-18: “And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all [men, both] free and bond, both small and great.”

Now, it’s time for Prophecy Bootcamp.

Prophecy Bootcamp is where we deal with the basics of prophecy, the Second Coming of Christ, and what will happen in the future according to the Bible. Our aim here is not to make predictions but to help you get prepared by understanding how things will unfold in the end times.

Our topic for today is titled “The Great White Throne Judgment (Part 13)” from Dr. Tim LaHaye’s book “Understanding Bible Prophecy for Yourself”.

The Lake of Fire

Those who do not have their name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (which guarantees that their name remains in the Book of Life) will, according to Revelation 20:15, be “cast into the lake of fire,” the final dwelling place of the unbelieving dead. It is the hell that Revelation 20:14 calls “the second death.”

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.“

Sinners die once, are kept in torment until the end of the 1,000 years, and are then resurrected to the Great White Throne Judgment, where the Christ they refused to accept as Savior determines the degree or intensity of their eternal punishment. He then will banish them to the lake of fire — for eternity. This will not be a pretty sight — nor is it necessary, either! For the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” One of the clearest offers of salvation in all the Bible came from our Lord Jesus Christ Himself: “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

Make that right choice today!

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at this topic in our next broadcast/podcast.

In closing, let’s consider what God wants you and me to do in light of His Second Coming.

Jesus Christ said in Luke 19:13 to “Occupy till I come.” In light of that, we are continuing our Bible study series on the books of First & Second Thessalonians which Paul wrote to believers who had concerns about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and what they should do as they waited. This section is titled “Handling Your Sex Drive (Part 1)” from the book “Waiting on the Second Coming” by Ray C. Stedman.

We may think of the ancients as very different from us, but they really were not. Those people who lived in the bustling seaport city of Thessalonica felt the same kind of pressures and drives we do. New Testament Thessalonica was rather like San Francisco — filled with business and commerce and the usual hustle and bustle of a large city, along with culture and beauty and art. But there was also degradation and sin, shame and sordidness. The Thessalonians were driven by the same forces that drive us. In the realism and wisdom of the Scriptures, therefore, the apostle Paul taught them how to handle life in many practical areas.

First, he taught them that they “ought to walk [live] and to please God.” That is the number one subject in the curriculum of the Holy Spirit. The Christian’s business is to live to please God. The word “ought,” which is made up of an elision of the two English words “owe” and “it,” reflects that priority. We owe it to God to please Him! Paul tells us why, here and in other passages. Second Corinthians 5:15 says, “He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.”

The great truth that every Christian must learn, says the apostle, is that “you are not your own. ” We no longer belong to ourselves. We cannot let our own desires take priority in life. Rather, we “are bought with a price.” Jesus died on our behalf, in our place. You deserved that death; I deserved it. But He paid the penalty Himself. Now we belong to Him. He has invaded our being by the Holy Spirit, and the purpose of our lives has been dramatically transformed. We are to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died for us and was raised again from the dead.

Every appeal to the Christian in the New Testament is made on that basis, and that is why Paul put it first here. The Christian “ought to live and to please God.” As someone has well said, “The main thing is to see that the main thing remains the main thing.” We ought to remind ourselves every day that our business is not to do what we want done but to please the Lord, who has redeemed us at such fearful cost.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at this topic in our next broadcast/podcast.

Remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:42: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matthew 24:44 says, “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
