A pregnant Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death after she refused to renounce her Christian faith has given birth to a baby girl.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, delivered her baby in a Sudanese prison on Monday. Her husband was not allowed to be with her during the birth, CNN reported.

She was sentenced to hanging earlier this month, but the court said it wouldn’t carry out the punishment until she gave birth. A judge gave her a period of time to renounce her Christian faith in order to be spared from the death penalty, but Ibrahim refused.

The family is now waiting on an appeal.

Ibrahim was arrested last year when her Muslim father’s family claimed she married a Christian man. She was jailed in February on an additional apostasy charge when she renounced Islam and said she has been a Christian her whole life.
